Cohen grew up in Houston, Texas, and while the Texas of his teens may have been home to Big Oil, Enron, the Bush family, and the drab grey Astros jerseys of the 90′s, he prefers to think of it as the Texas of yore- home to Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, the Space Program, and rainbow orange Astros jerseys. It stands to reason, then, that his current home of New York City must be the mythical Empire City – Rocky Mountains of architecture, epicenter of modern art, home to Charles Mingus and The Velvet Underground.

It was with these timeless inspirations in mind that Cohen created The Color by Yellowbirds, his “solo” debut. Double-speed auto-harp glissandos, glowing backwards pedal-steel, bubbling echo and fuzz guitars coalesce into a warm wall of sound. As existential lyrical themes emerge, delivered nonchalantly over psyched-out aural landscapes, the picture emerges of a dust-blown, 4th dimensional Future West. This is Cohen’s quixotic world where “only the purist tones can be heard.”

This is a golden video. When I first saw it, it cemented in me the understanding that a good driver can anticipate the dynamics of the car and perfectly time their inputs to match. He would of course always be waiting for the car if he weren't timing the transitions so they end when he needs them to for the next input.

Naturally he is still having to react to the car and road surface, but he does so in a way that returns complete control to him quickly. Also, you know you've got it sussed when the steering wheel is mostly straight going around corners!

There are 173 turns in the Nürburgring Nordschleife. That car attempted murder 174 times. God damn good driving though. Seeing newer cars (albeit lapping faster) looks boring because of all the driver aids and well tuned suspension, tires, etc. This lap was all driver input and no mistakes.

I am impressed by how quickly and how often Stephan makes corrections. As skilled as he is I still wonder how many times it was shear luck he didn't loose it. A lot of credit has to go to the tires that survived this outing. I would love to have seen him run this same course with a boxster. I think there would have been far fewer corrections.

The problem with having such a capable test driver is no matter how lethal the car is (like the CTR) he will always say "No it's fine. Easy to handle. I had no problem tossing it down the Nordschleife." - Result: EVERY CUSTOMER WILL DIE! :-) :-)

@Nick Duplaga He's right about several things, the old RUF Yellowbird was a pile of trash when it came to its overall balance, because it was too much power crammed into a chassis that couldn't really properly handle it with bad weight distribution. The heavy rear weight bias provides better traction on the rear axle, but that's only true when the weight is actually focused on that end of the car. That's why the age-old advice for the car was to keep modulating the throttle properly when the oversteer gets induced, because hitting the brakes shifts the weight forward which exacerbates the oversteer and makes saving it much more difficult or outright impossible.

Better tires would help but wouldn't cancel out this inherently bad weight distribution issue. In games like Gran Turismo you can manually rectify it by adding weight to the front side of the car with a ballast. I have AC and ACC and AC, as much praise as it gets, still has some glaring issues and limitations with its physics, like the "phantom body roll" that never got fixed until ACC. I remember when an actual driver posted about it on Kunos' official forums and the loser lead programmer/studio head got butthurt and basically resorted to childish insults instead of just fixing his game.

Also where is the IRL Spa lap with the car? I see a couple modern ones but not any with the same driver as this video (Stefan Rosser)

@Theultrak For a track like Nordschleife the stock setup is decent I don’t know how you are sliding around everywhere. Or just adjust the cambers, and toes with above setup I use. (front camb +0.1 toe +18), (rear camber +0.1 toe +22).
I don’t drive these tracks/even this car much so I just set up the car, took me a few minutes.) Nothing to do with tires, or engine placement.

This might be some of the most skilful driving I have ever witnessed. It is car control on a whole other level, how he didn't make 1 mistake I have no idea. As remarkably unbalanced as that chassis is, the way driver predicts it's movements and winds the oppo' lock on is absolutely mesmerising!

At the same time that this RUF was driving this lap, you could get a Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette that topped out at 254mph, for far less money. In terms of top speed, that was as fast as you could get in a road-going vehicle.

Wasn't exactly a slouch in corners either, C4's had a great chassie in general.

@Specoos Never said it was like the real thing, just giving my level of experience and head to head comparisons from a licensed simulator since I doubt anyone in these comments has ever even been in the real thing, let alone driven one. I've driven plenty of the real cars that I've also driven in the simulator, I'm well aware of the differences.

I agree most rigs, including my own, stuggle to give you even half the experience that the real thing does, but I also think you'd be surprised at just how accurate the software is these days, and just how accurate the rigs that real F1 drivers use to train are, and even what you can get in your own home for ~$10k

I'm watching this to learn how to drive this thing in Gran Turismo 4 with the DFP and N3(performance road) tires. I almost did a clean lap with this car but messed up on Brunnchan. Another section or two I mess up on are Flugpatz and Adenauer Forst.

Demont Washington it always has you on the edge donnit? Having the center of gravity at the back sure fucks up weight distribution, and your natural senses with it. If all your life all you've done is drive FR cars, or even MR cars, stepping in a RR car is putting one foot in the grave. RR cars have the heaviest and most pronounced snap oversteer due to the lack of weight at the front, which makes the car's favourite stunt flying backwards and diving its back into the corner you were about to tackle. Truly wonderful cars, RRs. Shame they've become rare because no one knows how to drive them safely, so they get labelled as murderers.

Guys who didn't respect the 911 or had more ego then talent often died in them, real widowmakers. My neighbor when I was a kid bought one and my dad and I went over to look at it and my dad who was a great driver warned the guy to work up to speed with it and get to know it and the guy was like, whatever I know what I'm doing. Sure enough the first week the guy had it he went ass first off a corner into some trees and almost died.

i've tried this car in sim as well, and its super fun and pretty ez to drive, it's like an 86, but with a lot of power, this video in another hand showed just how realistic the sim was because the real car literally has the same driving dynamics as the one in the sim!
anyways, appreciated the video and nice driving as well!

I consider myself a pretty good simracer but I have crashed in the first few corners every single time I hopped in this car. Can't even imagine doing this in real life. This is one of the hardest cars to drive at speed and you can see why in the video: You have oversteer absolutely everywhere.

@Ignacio Romero You are right in saying most high end cars did have ABS, all Mercedes passenger cars have had ABS since 1984, you are good.

I hope to be able to teach my kids someday how to handle car like this and for them to be able to experience a rear wheel drive car sliding around a turn like this guy does so magnificently. Going over hills and bumps while sliding sideways is a lot of fun, along with nailing an exit at WOT.

@Olivier Savard Indeed. That's why it's more difficult on a screen than in VR, and with a FFB wheel. Assetto Corsa with a quality FFB wheel in VR is pretty close to real life. VR allows for 3d awareness - real sense of scale/distance etc.. and the FFB to 'feel' the rubber on the tarmac.

@Kotaro Jujo He means no feedback in the way that you're not in the car, you're not really looking outside at the track and you're not really feeling the car react to your gestures by your hands and feet, you're just looking at a screen. I have to agree, driving a car in real life is generally easier first hand than in a sim simply for that reason.
