Everywhere
Yellowcard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn it inside out so I can see
The part of you that's driftin over me
'Cause when I look you're never there
But when I sleep you're everywhere
You're everywhere

Tell me how I got this far
Tell me why you're here and who you are
'Cause everytime I look
You're never there
And everytime I sleep
You're always there

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes
It's you I see
You're everything I know
That makes me believe
I'm not alone

I recognized the way you make me feel
It's hard to think that you might not be real
I sense it now the water's getting deep
I try to wash the pain away from me
Away from me

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes
It's you I see
You're everything I know
That makes me believe
I'm not alone
I'm not alone

When I touch your hand
It's then I understand
The beauty lies within
It's now that we begin
You always light my way
Whenever comes a day
No matter where I go
I always feel you so

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes
It's you I see
You're everything I know
That makes me believe
I'm not alone

You're everywhere to me
And when I catch my breath
It's you I breathe
You're everything I know
That makes me believe
I'm not alone

And you're everyone I see,
So tell me, do you see me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yellowcard's song "Everywhere" convey the singer's longing for someone that he or she knows is absent in reality, but present in thought and imagination. The first two lines, "Turn it inside out so I can see/The part of you that's drifting over me," suggest a desire for deeper understanding and connection with the absent person. The next two lines, "When I look you're never there/But when I sleep you're everywhere," reveal the paradox of the person's physical absence, but persistent presence in the singer's subconscious.

In the next stanza, the singer asks for an explanation of the presence of the absent person, "Tell me how I got this far/Tell me why you're here and who you are." The following lines reinforce the notion that the person is both absent and present, "Cause every time I look/You're never there/And every time I sleep/You're always there."

The chorus repeats the title lyric, "Cause you're everywhere to me/And when I close my eyes/It's you I see/You're everything I know/That makes me believe/I'm not alone." This repetition reinforces the singer's need for the presence of the absent person to feel whole and not alone. The bridge of the song suggests that the singer may not even be sure if the absent person is real or imagined, but concludes that it doesn't matter because the person makes him or her feel understood and seen.

Overall, the lyrics to "Everywhere" express the human longing for connection and the persistence of memory and imagination in filling emotional gaps when physical presence is lacking.

This year i went to warped, and saw yellowcard live. This was the first song I've ever heard from Yellowcard. Back in the early 2000s I remember walking in to Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit for a Lagwagon concert. As I entered the building this is the song they were playing. Being as that I already knew and liked the original from Michelle Branch, I was hooked! I became the biggest YC fan for like 5 years. Went to see them live 4 or 5 times.
Here I am 35 years old now, listening to them for the first time in a couple years.
