its one I play note perfect and practice one or twice a week to keep it under my fingers. Saw them live back in the day twice. they were great and Steve Howe was such a master.

Just for the heck of it, I decided earlier today to see if I've been playing Mood for a Day right, which I learned over 40 years ago. Looks like I had a few things wrong. I had it maybe around 90% right. I felt a little silly, but at least I know that my ear has gotten better over the years, even if my body is going to hell in a hand basket!!!!!

Here's a funny Mood for a Day story. When I first learned it in the mid 70's I was just starting out on guitar. I thought that Howe had double tracked the melody and bass notes - I couldn't imagine that he was playing both at the same time. So, I learned the melody and proudly played it for my guitar buddy Rob and his band. They didn't laugh at me but said, "Well, that's pretty good, but what about the bass notes?" They said you could play both at the same time. They were very cool about it, but boy was I embarrassed.

Thanks for posting this! Wow, I pecked this out on the guitar a couple years after high school after listening to it dozens of times, and despite playing it almost every day for years I could never play it flawlessly all the way through (came close most of the time). Yet Howe makes it look so easy. I tried The Clap too, and got parts of that down, but never the whole thing. That was in the late '70s. I loved Yes but Howe's acoustic guitar work was awe-inspiring. This and an acoustic piece Jan Akkerman (easily the world's fastest and most underrated electric guitarist) composed somewhere around the same time as "Hocus Pocus" were the two most beautiful acoustic pieces I ever heard from this era. Howe was the first rock guitarist voted into the Guitar Player Hall of Fame and it was deserved. I also loved his long electric solo on "Relayer."

I remember quite clearly the November 1982 afternoon where my ears were first introduced to this track (probably mere minutes after my lungs were re-introduced to a few hits of Thai stick). However, the hosts/DJs that day were definitely metal heads; if I recall correctly we'd all been bludgeoned by several Iron Maiden tracks - spun on vinyl - before this, Mood for a Day, was played.. The fact I remember it so clearly says something, I just wish I could tell you what? It's such a playful, dubious piece--not all that far-removed from the far older, Peter's Theme, in Pytor Tychaovsky's "Peter and the Wolf".. However, for me this will always be a timeless, nostalgic scurry down memory lane, and thru my most precious memories as a young man trying to make his way ...

I once saw a kid about about 12 or 13 years old walk into a busy music shop, pick up an acoustic guitar & after playing the first 3 notes of Stairway To Heaven, launch into a flawless rendition of this. Everyone in the shop stopped what they were doing...
The amazement was palpable when he walked out 3 minutes later to cheers & applause which clearly embarrassed him.
One of those Saturday mornings you never forget.

Honestly I do not know where the good music is over. I am convinced, however, that Yes and others have written timeless pages and are unlikely to be forgotten. The commercial radios do not give more space to the famous groups of the past and we who love them belong to what others call "niche". You may be eluding to the fact that quite often when he performs this piece live, he adds a cut down version of Vivaldi Concerto in D Largo. Search on youtube Largo and Mood for a day, and you will see what i mean.
