While releasing series of singles and EPs, the group played various unpromoted and experimental shows through the year, some of which are chronicled in the liner notes of later releases. Their debut album, Angles Without Edges, was released on the unfortunate date of September 11, 2001 and was ignored by virtually everyone, except those who listened, and loved it. An album of Stevie Wonder covers titled Stevie was recorded during their formative period was also released later in 2003.
Madlib envisioned something similar to a Wu-Tang Clan trajectory for the group, with each of the subsequent records released as different phases of the group under their individual names. Several new performers came into the frey during this period, many of whom performed on Madlib's Shades of Blue, his remix album for Blue Note. Expanded beyond the original five members of YNQ, the greater collective grew into Yesterdays Universe.
As early as 2003, Madlib's all-inclusive approach to expanding Yesterdays Universe was causing tensions among the original core group. Yesterdays New Quintet announced a breakup in 2007, but by this time several new groups had already recorded dozens of tracks under Madlib's direction: Young Jazz Rebels, The Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble, Sound Directions, Jahari Massamba Unit, and Jackson Conti, just to name a few. The compilation Yesterdays Universe (2007) served to announce these new groups. Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz (2010) introduces even more.
At this point we should address the frequent claims that the five members of Yesterdays New Quintet and the entire Yesterdays Universe collective are fictional aliases, mere figment of Madlib's hazy imagination. Unfortunately, our agreement with Yesterdays New Quintet/Yesterdays Universe prohibits us from divulging any biographical data about the group members or commenting on their physical status in space and time. We can, however, point out that there are documented live performances, and Yesterdays Universe artists who are known for their work outside of the Madlib circle – Karriem Riggins, Ivan Conti, Todd Simon, and Dan Ubick among them. But due to the private nature of Madlib and the members of Yesterdays Universe, we can say no more.
Superwoman / Where Were You Last Winter
Yesterday's New Quintet Lyrics

But is that really in her head
But I just want to live each day
To love her for what she is
Mary wants to be another movie star
But is that really in her mind
And all the things she wants to be
She needs to leave behind
Wish that you knew me too-very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head
Very well, and I think I can face-very well
Wish that you knew me too-very well
And I think I can cope with everything going through your head
Mary wants to be a superwoman
And try to boss the bull around
But does she really think that she will get by with a dream
My woman want to be a superwoman
And I just had to say good-bye
Because I can't spend all my hours start to cry
But, very well, I believe I know you
Very well wish that you knew me too
Very well, and I think I can deal with everything going through your head
Very well, think that I know you too
Very well, wish you knew me like I know you
Very well, but I think I can deal with everything going through your head
Your filthy head
Very well, dum dum da, dum dum da
Very well, wish you knew me too
Very well, and I wish I could think of everything going through your head
Very well, dum dum da, dum da, dum da dum dum da, dum da, very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head
When the summer came you were not around
Now the summer's gone and love cannot be found
Where were you when I needed you-last winter, my love?
When the winter came you went further south
Parting from love's nest, leaving me in doubt
Where are you when I need you, like right now?
Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed
But tomorrow will reflect love's past
When the winter came you were not around
Through the bitter winds love could not be found
Where were you when I needed you, last winter, my love?
Oh I need you baby, I need you baby
Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed,
But tomorrow will reflect love's past oh
Spring will fill the air and you will come around,
Well is it summer love that will let me down,
Where were you when I needed you, last winter, my love?
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, la la la la la
Where are you when I need you, like right now?
Right now, right now, right now
Where were you when I needed you last winter, my dear
I need you baby, I need you baby, I need you baby
Oh, Where were you when I needed you last winter, last winter
Yea, need you baby, need you, need you baby,
Oh, you want me too need you baby
Oh where were you when I needed you last, dear
Yea
In the song "Where Are You?" by Yesterday, the lyrics depict a narrative about a woman named Mary who desires to be a superwoman and a movie star. The artist questions whether these aspirations are truly in Mary's head and mind or if they are merely illusions. The singer, on the other hand, expresses a simpler desire: to live each day and love Mary for who she truly is, beyond her aspirations.
The song also touches upon the challenges Mary might face in pursuing her dreams. The artist suggests that in order for Mary to become the person she wants to be, she needs to let go of certain things from her past. However, the singer acknowledges that they understand Mary very well and can cope with the thoughts and emotions she is going through.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of longing and a feeling of absence. The lyrics reference different seasons, such as summer and winter, and emphasize how Mary was not there during certain times of need. The singer questions where Mary was during those crucial moments and expresses a sense of disappointment.
Ultimately, the song conveys a complex mix of emotions, including love, frustration, and a longing for understanding. It raises questions about the nature of aspirations and the sacrifices one must make in pursuing them, while also exploring the impact these choices have on relationships and emotional well-being.
