He was born in Feb 15, 1978 and started to learn the piano at home at the age of 5. In 1988 he moved to England, and in December 1996 he participated in the album The Musicians of Purcell (Decca). Graduating from Purcell School of Music in July 1997, Yiruma continued his musical aspirations and completed a Composition major from King's College London in June 2000.
While studying at Kings College, this promising pianist released his first album "Love Scene" through DECCA records. Additionally, during his time in college, he participated in a musical tour in Europe. Making a historical impact for his country, Yiruma was the first Korean artist to receive an invitation to perform at the 2002 MIDEM in Cannes, France.
While being successful in the music industry, Yiruma decided to serve in the South Korean military. Hence, in 2006 he gave up his British citizenship and enlisted in the Korean Navy. Completed his service in the Korean Navy, he began the 2008 Yiruma Come Back Tour, Ribbonized, in 20 cities across Korea. His former concerts in Korea have been always on issue. Actually, he is the first newage artist whose concert tour in more than 10 cities was sold-out in Korea. The talented musician Yiruma, in 2009, became a DJ for KBS 1FM and MC for MBC in 2010. Yiruma has released 8 studio albums and composed lots of soundtracks for musicals, films and plays. He composed the main theme for KBS drama and “Fairy Tale” for the super hit drama in 2011.
In 2011, Yiruma released his best album with Sony Music Entertainment Korea Inc., and his concert in 13 Korean cities has successfully held. Official videos for the best album are on Youtube Yiruma VEVO. The videos including his most famous pieces “Kiss the Rain”, “Maybe” and “River Flows in You”, hit over 100 million views on YouTube.
2012 May, Yiruma released his 7th studio album [Stay in Memory]. Since it has been 3 years from Yiruma’s last studio album, he composed beautiful piano solo pieces which fans have been waiting for. The Album 「Stay in Memory」 is recorded in a concert hall for vividness of playing by two Korean best engineers; one is Lee Jae Hoon and the other is Hwang Byeong Joon who is the first Korean winner of “Best Engineer” on Grammy Awards. He has participated in mastering this album and made the best of Yiruma’s playing. And Yiruma held concert tour which is extension of album promotion. Yiruma’s concert is one of the popular concerts in Korea, 28 Shows in 26 different cities were all sold out.
Yiruma made appearances on German TV show “Wilkommen Bei Carmen Nebel” 2012 March, and received huge applause by the audience. 2013 April, Yiruma held first live album release showcase in Passionskirche, Berlin, Germany. Media and fans were astonished by Yiruma’s amazing performances. Yiruma went on Australian promotion tour in May 2013 covering media interviews, TV and radio appearances. 부제 : 우리 다시 사랑하기를
처음 이 곡을 들었을 때 처음에는 선율이 아름다워서 그 선율을 따라가면서 사랑했던 혹은 사랑하고 있는 그 사람과의 가슴 아리도록 사랑했던 추억들을 떠올리곤 했어요. 이 곡에 푹 빠져들었을 때 저는 그렇게 떠올린 추억들을 한 음 한 음에 담았어요. 그렇게 모든 음표들을 들어서 제 마음을 깊게 묻었어요.
그래서 어느 순간 제게 이 곡을 감상한다는 건 제 모든 마음을 이 곡 안에 담는 것이었고 이 곡을 연주한다는 건 내가 한 음 한 음 묻어두었던 저의 모든 추억들을 꺼내어 보는 것이었어요.
너무나도 제 마음을 담았던 곡을 연주해보고 싶어서 10주년 버전의 모든 영상을 찾아 보며 청음으로 음을 찾아보기도 하면서 홀로 수 없이 많은 시간 연주하며 곡을 완성시켜 나갔어요.
완성했을 때 쯤에야 알게되었습니다. 이루마님의 10주년 버전 악보가 나왔다는 걸.
하나의 음을 치는 것조차 조심스러웠고 이미 그 음에 많은 감정을 쏟았어서 음을 바꾸는 게 많이 어려웠어요. 이 버전의 악보를 구하기 위해 수 없이 들어왔던 그리고 마음을 담았던 지난 시간들이 떠오르네요. 이렇게 제가 이루마님의 곡을 연주할 수 있게 되어서 너무나도 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전하고 싶습니다.
이번에는 참여하지 못하게 되어서 너무나도 아쉬운 마음에 이렇게 글을 적게 되었습니다. 다음에 꼭 참여하게 될 기회가 있다면 행복할 것 같네요.
아직은 연주의 저의 마음을 담기에는 제가 많이 부족해서 아쉬웠어요. 선율을 따라가면서 모든 음에 담긴 제 마음을 표현한다는 건... 표현을 넘어서서 정말 어려운 일이더군요.
Do you 라는 연주를 들을 때면 저는 항상 새로웠습니다. 이건 제가 음악을 감상해서 들으며 떠올랐던 걸 그대로 적었던 글입니다.
처음 음이 시작하면서 누군가를 떠올리게 되요. 그리고 너에게 편지를 적어...
편지의 처음은 이렇게 시작해 우리 함께 했던 그 순간들을 기억하니(do you remember those moments we were together) 저의 마음 속에 있는 너에게 던지고 싶은 질문들을 편지에 그렇게 적어요.
저는 그렇게 던진 물음에 답이 없을 걸 알지만 그 때의 우리를 떠올리며 감상에 젖어들면서 우리는 이러한 선율의 사랑을 했었던 걸 떠올려요.
지금은 꿈처럼 아른하게 사랑했던 우리의 모습 다시는 그 때의 우리의 모습 볼 수 없지만 영원히 나의 마음 속에는 너가 살아 숨쉴 거야..
제가 느꼈던 이 곡에 대한 이야기입니다. 물론 매번 들을 때마다 새로운 감상이 떠올라 이야기를 채워주곤 해요.
이루마님의 우리 사랑하기를 이라는 부제는 짧지만 너무나 깊고 울림있는 의미가 담긴 부제였어요. 흘러가는 선율, 하나의 음에서도 모든 마음을 느낄 수 있었듯이
누군가 제 글을 읽고 다시금 Do you를 들었을 때
사랑했던 사람과 돌아가고 싶은 순간들, 사랑이 이루어지기를 바랬던 간절한 소망, 사랑하고 있는 사람이 있다면 그 사람과의 사랑했던 순간들을 떠올리며 마음 속으로 그 사람에게 편지 한 통씩 전할 수 있기를 바라며.

When I was younger I had two friends... Best Friends.
One day one pulled me aside and said, “When are you going to get rid of her?”
I was hurt.
I thought we were all getting along together...But THEY weren’t.
A few years past and the girl who pulled me aside kind of left... But I was still friends with her...
Me and my other best friend hanged out every single day. We were inseparable... She made new friends and I did too. We all did.
One day... my best friend had to leave... I knew it was coming soon...but I couldn’t believe that the time was already here...
Of course I cried, inside, because I NEVER cry for ANYONE...
Is what I thought. OF COURSE I CRIED, she was my best friend...
The friend who pulled me aside now hangs out with new new people, her old friends she made back then had a fight... And my other friend’s new friend got into a fight too. But I couldn’t do anything even if I tried soooo hard.
Now, the friend who pulled me aside won’t even talk to me unless I approach her first. And each time she walks past me, ignoring me, it hurts. It really does.
The friend that moved to a different country, well we talked for 1 or 2 years after... I heard ALL about her new life, new school, and new friends. I was happy for her but, she started to change. One day it was my birthday... I waited and waited for her to wish me a happy birthday, but she never did... I wasn’t sad or upset about the fact that she didn’t wish me that but rather that she didn’t even talk to me anymore... One day she texted me, “Can you just PLEASE STOP. I’m very busy,” and, “I want to make new friends and you should just go and do that too,” she continued on and on but I can’t remember because I was so hurt. But I do remember she was basically saying that she doesn’t want me to talk to her and that I should just forget about her and not bother her. She read my texts and didn’t reply but now she doesn’t even. Even today I still wish her a happy birthday.
I made new friends and kept some old... But what I want to tell people out there in the world is to ALWAYS appreciate and cherish the time you have with your friends.
