In 1993, I was invited out to an inner-city camp at Montgomery Bell made up of mostly African American kids from the W.O. Smith Music School in Nashville. Because I was fairly new to this kind of education outreach, I was nervous about how to hold the interest of eight and ten year olds. I had just written a new mandolin piece but had not named it, so I got a notepad and passed out a slip of paper to each child. I asked the children to listen to me play my new piece and to write down what they wanted the tune to be named. Some of the titles were fantastic; I could have easily used several of them. One ten-year old wrote, “Butterfly’s Day Out.” It was so poetic. “Butterfly’s Day Out” would soon become a favorite, and one I later recorded with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer.

I like the backstory Mark, and I love this composition ever since I first heard it so long ago. It is also a favorite of a 4-legged friend of mine!

I remember hearing this song many years ago as a teenager, when visiting San Diego. Loved it. Just today I remembered listening to this music, and recalled "Butterfly.... " something. A quick google and I found it. Such a great piece!

I love this story, I have loved this piece for quite some time. It's beautiful music for children to dance to, with scarves as butterfly wings, of course!

My husband and I heard this on the classical station and we both commented how beautiful it was. Our 21 month old was silent with wonder the entire time it played. It is our new favorite!

I heard this on a classical music station on my drive home from work. I thought it was the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. It makes me want to lay back in the grass, under a tree, and just breathe. So Relaxing

I just heard this today on my local classical music radio station. I had to hear it again. Oh, it's beautiful!

Alone in my house listening while the leaves are falling out of the trees before a rain. Life is good in this moment.
