Here Comes My Baby
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the midnight moonlight I'll, be walkin' a long and lonely mile.
And every time I do, I keep seein' this picture of you.

Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
And it comes as no surprise to me, with another guy.
Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
Walking with a love, with a love that's all so fine,
Never could be mine, no matter how I try.

You never walk alone, and you're forever talkin' on the phone.
I've tried to call you names, but every time it comes out the same.

Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
And it comes as no surprise to me, with another guy.
Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
Walking with a love, with a love that's all so fine,
Never could be mine, no matter how I try.

I'm still waiting for your heart, cause I'm sure that some day it's gonna start.
You'll be mine to hold each day, but 'till then, this is all that I can say.

Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
And it comes as no surprise to me, with another guy.
Here comes my baby, here she comes now,

Walking with a love, with a love that's all so fine,
Never could be mine, no matter how I try.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yo La Tengo’s “Here Comes My Baby” describe the experience of walking alone at night and being haunted by a vision of a lost love. The singer is clearly pining for someone that they can’t have, as evidenced by the repeated refrain “never could be mine, no matter how I try”. Despite this, they still hope that one day the object of their affection will come around and choose them instead.

The lyrics are notable for their simplicity and directness, as well as their use of vivid imagery (the midnight moonlight, the picture of the lost love) that helps to bring the emotions of the song to life. It’s a powerful example of a love song that manages to be both melancholy and hopeful at the same time, capturing the complexities of romantic longing in a way that’s easily relatable for listeners.

Overall, “Here Comes My Baby” is a powerful depiction of the sometimes-torturous nature of unrequited love. It’s a song that speaks to the heart of the human experience, channeling universal emotions in a way that’s both evocative and emotionally resonant.

I like the way they have reworked it NOT using the Cat Stevens riffs. Shows the strength of the song.

The Tremeloes' hit is so good it will always be definitive, but this band adds their own touches in several places which ultimately make it a very nice version of the song. So: thumbs up!

I'm surprised this has so few views and comments! I think I first started listening to these guys about 8~10 years ago and their songs still randomly pop in my head after all those years. Reminds me of all those years I lived in San Francisco and worked in the East Bay. Funny how that's a nostalgic memory now.
