I'll Be Around
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I stare into space
I'm looking for you
And I can see you
At times

I'll be around
To pick up your phone
I'll be around

See the kaleidoscope girl
In the doorway
She's looking my way
At times

I'll be around
Pick up your phone
I'll be around

Washing the dirt from your face
I'm looking for you
And I still miss you
At times

I'll be around

To pick up your phone
I'll be around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Yo La Tengo's "I'll Be Around" depict someone who is deeply missing someone in their life. The song starts with the singer talking about how they stare into space, trying to find the missing person. They can see glimpses of the person in their imagination, but they are not physically there. The singer then talks about how they will always be around to pick up the phone when this person calls. They want the missing person to know that they are there for them, no matter what.

In the next verse, the singer talks about a kaleidoscope girl who is looking their way. This could potentially be the missing person that they are singing about. They mention that despite still missing the person, they are going to be there for them whenever they need them.

The final verse is about washing the dirt off of the missing person's face. This could signify that the singer wants to help clean up whatever mess the missing person is in. They want to support them and be there for them, even when things get difficult.

Overall, the song is a beautiful sentiment of missing someone but being willing to be there for them, no matter what. It showcases the beauty and warmth of simple human connection, and how that connection can help us overcome the toughest of times.

Been having a rough couple of weeks. I'm reassessing things in my life nothing bad just time to do somethings differently. This song showed up at the right time. God bless everyone out there! You matter, we all matter! Love to one and all!❤

Very soft words

@johnmg88

Gentle sweetness and feedback laden guitar mangling.
Combined they make the best live band I've seen.

It warms my heart when a YLT anything breaks the 1M view mark... it's a crime how they're so unpopular in this day and age considering they've been around since the late 80s. They have achieved legendary status in the music industry and I wish them all the best. I had the pleasure of discovering them through Summer Sun about 7 years ago, been in love with them since.

Summer Sun is top 5 best soft rock albums ever made.

I discovered Yo La Tengo around 2006 on Satellite Radio (portable XM device). Was right around the time my college sweetheart was dumping me and the next few years were very miserable and lonely. The song was “You Can Have it All”. They have been one of my fav bands ever since.
