Nowhere Near
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you know how I feel
How I feel about you
Do you know this is real
How I feel around you

When I see you look at me
I'm not sure of anything
All I know is when you smile
I believe in everything
Do you know how I dream
How I dream about you
Do you know how I feel
Do you know...

Do you know how I feel
How I feel about you
Doesn't take much to tell
That I love, oh, I...

Everyone is here, but you're nowhere near

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yo La Tengo's "Nowhere Near" speak to someone who is in love and trying to convey that love to their significant other. The song is structured in a question-and-answer format, with the singer asking their lover if they know how they feel about them. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they convey a strong sense of passion and longing that anyone who has been in love will recognize.

The opening lyrics, "Do you know how I feel, how I feel about you," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is trying to express their love, but they're not sure if their lover understands just how deeply they feel. The line "All I know is when you smile, I believe in everything" is particularly poignant, as it speaks to the power of love to inspire faith and hope in even the most skeptical of people.

The second half of the song takes a slightly different tone, with the singer asking their lover if they know how much they dream about them. The lyrics are still filled with passion, but there's a hint of insecurity and doubt as well. The final line, "Everyone is here, but you're nowhere near," is a powerful one, as it speaks to the sense of isolation and loneliness that can come with being in love but feeling like your love is unrequited.

I always see these comments on YouTube videos that are strangely personal, but I love reading them. I guess it’s my turn for one of those comments. I found this song at around midnight in the summer of 2022. As soon as I heard it I knew I wouldn’t forget it. For months since that night, I’ve had this song on replay. The lyrics are so beautiful, along with the slow, almost haunting, melody. Something about this song keeps me revisiting it. I never add it to a playlist for someone else because I’ve associated this song with myself so strongly, I guess. It’s so personal and could apply for so many different situations. I’ve written in my journal about how this song makes me feel many times before and I won’t ever be able to articulate it. I am forever grateful that this track exists, and that Yo La Tengo continues to release awesome music. ❤

Used to listen to this in my apartment in Kyoto. No connections, wife, kids, family, back then. Title kinda fits.

I heard this song on that new Netflix special about psychedelics called “Have a Good Trip,” right as they began to interview my queen, Carrie Fisher (RIP). This song took me back to college 12 years ago...I can’t stop crying...but in a totally good way!! So many touching memories are associated with this song and the entire album...

Are you still here?

This song reminds me of that Nickelback song that goes "Now it's over, and I'm glad, I was a fool for all that I said". You can sing it right along to this song
