Satellite
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A lonely walk until the heaven's break
Come back home and see what's changed
Flipped the TV on and every channel's got some satellite

A broken shoe to practice walking straight
Take a little step and stop to think
About the planets and the atmosphere and the satellites
Wait for the day to come, the day to go
Take all the needles from your hair
See how the things that happen
Never really ever happen with a thought unaware

Around the corner, a while to zero in
And feel for where it ought to be
If not the nuts and bolts and that'll come

Like a satellite
Wait for the day to go, the day to come...

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of Yo La Tengo's "Satellite," the singer takes a "lonely walk" until the heaven's break, indicating an emotional distress or longing. When they return home, they notice changes that have taken place. Turning on the TV, they see that every channel has some satellite. This could imply the prevalence of modern technology in our daily lives, and how we are always connected to the world through it, but it could also be interpreted as the singer's attempt to reach out to others or seek a connection through satellite communication.

The next verse introduces the idea of practice and learning through the metaphor of "a broken shoe to practice walking straight." The singer takes a step back to reflect on the planets, the atmosphere, and satellites, perhaps thinking about the vastness of the universe and their own place in it. They wait for the day to come and go, and take all the needles from their hair, indicating a release of tension or a new beginning. The singer muses that the things that happen, happen without our awareness or control.

This song is deep. It reminds me of the current times.... the government(satellites) are everywhere... you can think you have escaped the government but before you know it a person is waiting for the day to come and day to go just like a satellite...

The government wants you to think that you have escaped. That is the ultimate trick the devil pulled.... thinking you escaped only to be caught in the belly of the beast!!
