Extension 33
Yoko Ono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Living at the why, extension 33,
Nothing to care or to worry.
Once I was in love with a blind man,
But my auntie told me, don't do it, its not worth it.

Living at the why, 33 years,
No one to call or to write to.
Once I was in love with a married man,
But my instincts told me, don't tell him, it'll kill you.

I'm sad I didn't marry the blind man,
But what's a life with three blind children?
I'm glad I never told the married man,
It saved my pride and freedom.

Living at the why, in 33 rooms,
Nowhere to visit or write to.
Once I was in love, it nearly killed me,
But now I have my pride and freedom.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom and pride.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom and pride.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom and pride.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom and pride.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom and pride.

Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom,
Freedom, freedom, freedom.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Yoko Ono's song Extension 33, tell a story of a woman who lives alone in a place called the why in one of the thirty-three rooms. She reminisces about two men she was once in love with but never acted upon because of different reasons. The first man she fell in love with was blind, and her aunt advised her against pursuing him because it was not worth it. The second man she fell in love with was married, and her instincts told her not to tell him because it would hurt her. She regrets not marrying the blind man because she feels that it was better than living alone with her three blind children. At the same time, she is glad she didn't tell the married man she loved him because it saved her pride and freedom. She concludes that despite having no one to visit her or write to her, she values her freedom and pride.

The song seems to explore the different choices and decisions that the woman had to make over the years. Her story highlights the various societal pressures that women face, such as the pressures to get married and have children. The song's repetition of the word freedom emphasizes the woman's current state of being content with her decisions and having a sense of pride and independence.
