It's Gonna Rain
Yoko Ono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's gonna rain, it's gonna rain
It's gonna rain like you've never seen before
It's gonna rain
Like Heaven packed out
And the sky fell out
It's gonna rain, oooh, it's gonna rain

You say life is a bowl of cherries
You give me a bowl of pits
The pits will grow into trees one day
I'm getting my cherries anyway
Maybe so, maybe so
I'm just living on tiptoe
Feeling like so–so
Trying not to step on your eggs
'Cause I know, it's gonna rain, it's gonna rain
You say life is a bowl of cherries
While trying to hide your bowl of pits
Don't tip my bowl
Don't crush my cherries
One day you'll get your trees and all
Yes I know, yes I know
I'm just living on tiptoe
Feeling like so–so
Trying not to step on your eggs
'Cause I know, it's gonna rain, it's gonna rain

Houses are slipping into the ocean
Shops and gyms are slipping into the ocean
Shake your vessel, break your pretzel
'Cause it's gonna rain
Shake your vessels, break your pretzels
It's gonna rain
It's gonna rain
It's gonna rain, ooh!

It's gonna rain, it's gonna rain
It's gonna rain, it's gonna rain

Overall Meaning

In the song "It's Gonna Rain," Yoko Ono sings about the inevitability of change and impermanence in life, with an apocalyptic twist. The opening lines state that "It's gonna rain like you've never seen before" and the following lyrics describe the chaos and destruction that will ensue as a result. The metaphorical language used throughout the song likens the destruction to the sky falling out and houses slipping into the ocean.

In the second verse, Ono references the familiar saying that "life is a bowl of cherries" but then subverts it by saying that her bowl is filled with pits. She acknowledges the hardships and challenges she is facing, but also maintains a sense of hopeful determination. The line "I'm getting my cherries anyway" speaks to her resilience and determination to find joy and positivity despite the difficulties she faces. The final verse returns to the impending storm, encouraging listeners to "shake their vessel" and be prepared for the coming rain.

Overall, "It's Gonna Rain" is a song about facing uncertainty and change with a sense of determination and resilience. Ono's use of vivid imagery and metaphorical language creates a powerful sense of impending doom, but also a message of hope and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Dear yoko, i just saw you and john, ov tv, above the sky. Wonderful. I am 72, and loved your message of peace and love. You opened up my direction in life. I was a hippy then, but continue the work. Your conceptual vision, that john wrote imagine gives us the 1st vision, of what 5th dimensional world will be like.....(google, spiritual ascension, 5th dimension earth) i thank you both. I loved john gave you credit, for the concept, and agree, it could have been the reason you were united...If we can imagine we can create that reality. I doubt you will read my comment but only way i can thank you. And dont know how contact you.... so happy. NEW YEAR! Another potential, to create love and peace. We were so optimistic back then, and lots good changes come about from yr song. Lots more to do. I still miss john, i imagined him on a starship, giving a concert, to our loving galactic, star brothers and sisters. Is that reality???? Or conceptual art???? True??? Or just my imagination. Some may say. "I,m a dreamer". One day you will join us, and the world will, live as one.... thank you
