O'Oh
Yoko Ono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One, two.

O'oh, Central Park,
O'oh, evening skyline,
O'oh, helicopter,
O'oh, firecrackers,
O'oh, July 4th in New York City.
O'oh, trees are laughing,
O'oh, windows smiling,
O'oh, water shining,
O'oh, people rolling,
O'oh, July 4th in New York City

I never knew we could be so nice to each other.
I never thought we'd be laughing together.
I never knew life could be sweet and simple.
I never thought that was possible.

O'oh, dogs are chasing,
O'oh, clouds are dreaming,
O'oh, people dancing,
O'oh, July 4th in New York City.

I never knew we could be so kind to each other.
I never thought we'd be singing together.
I never knew life could be so sweet and simple.
I never thought that was possible.

O'oh, Central Park,
O'oh, evening skyline,
O'oh, helicopter,
O'oh, firecrackers.

O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh,
O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh,O'oh,

O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh,
O'oh, O'oh, O'oh, O'oh.

Overall Meaning

Yoko Ono's song "O'Oh" captures the spirit of a hot and lively July 4th evening in New York City. The song opens with a series of sounds that capture the energy and excitement of the city on this day: the buzz of a helicopter overhead, the crackle of firecrackers, the rush of people rolling past. As Ono moves through the song, she draws our attention to the beauty of the city, observing how even the trees seem to be laughing and the water shining with happiness. The song takes Ono by surprise - she notes how she "never knew we could be so nice to each other" and says she "never thought we'd be laughing together." For her, life has always been fraught with complexity and strife. But on this day, she is struck by the sweetness and simplicity of it all.

As the song progresses, Ono adds more details about the scene - dogs chasing each other, clouds dreaming, and people dancing. Each detail adds to the overall sense of joy and liveliness that pervades the song. As she repeats the opening sounds at the end, the "O'oh"s become a kind of mantra - a way to capture the intensity and excitement of the evening.

I think this was originally recorded during the infamous "lost weekend." I could be wrong about that. The album "A Story" comes to mind. 1974. I think. But as I said, I could be wrong. Anybody help me here? Whenever it was recorded - I like it.

Play this for anyone who insists that Yoko is just a warbling screecher and has no credentials as a "pop" musician or artist!
