Okay everyone!~
I just had a few things I wanted to say about the video that I'd love for you to take the time to read! 💚

Firstly I just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE! OH MY GOODNESS!! You guys have shown me so much support and it means the world, seriously.
I know people say that a lot, but I mean it.

Second, shutouts to Vanna for being an amazing friend and doing such a fantastic job voicing Monika (as always).

This Monika video was the very first character analysis I wrote, she's the character that inspired me to start this series and rethink my channel and how I can impact others.
She's a character who's very special to me, and one of the characters I relate to the most in fiction, period.
I constantly went back to this script as I worked on the other videos and added/subtracted things based on what I included in the videos on Natsuki, Yuri, and Sayori.
It's for this reason that you may be asking "What about this aspect of the character, like how she impacted x, y, or z?", it's likely in one of those videos as it had more to do with them and how their behaviors were influenced!
I didn't wanna put all the details in one video, it is supposed to be a full series to watch after all!
Despite that, I do regret not discussing some things.
Namely some fun stuff like the comedy written in her character dialogue, the deep sadness/depression she faces, the reality that her world is constant torture when the game is turned off (other than when I brought up derealization), or the fact that she couldn't fully bring herself to actually delete the other characters, and restored the world once she realized what she was doing was wrong.
Monika is a very divisive character and I know not everyone is going to agree with what I have to say, and that's okay, that's just the nature of the character and what makes her fun to discuss, I just hope I maybe helped you look at her in a new light!
But regardless, the things I did talk about were what I felt closest to my chest, and are the things I feel are the most commonly misunderstood.
I was also able to do some amazing things here, like create that cover of "Your Reality"!

@Tregrenos Not really Dan has said the dev's ending is canon implying that we can easily ignore the other two ending

I guess you can look at the good ending as Monikas successful attempt at giving the player close to a happy ending that you will get
And can look at the bad ending as a failed attempt

Now I know your wondering when was it stated the good one was canon? Shouldn't it be players choice?
Well Dan said the dev's ending was canon and the only ending that mentions the dev is the good ending

So we can easily ignore the bad and quick ending but I do see your point

Canon? What do I mean canon the game has paths and routes what do I mean canon?

Well Dan has implied not directly said but he has implied their is a canon route to the game and events and it's also been implied through the side stories but it's complex

Now he has mentioned it is sort of complex
With that out of the way I'm just gonna say it I think all of the routes happen in act 1 at the same time just from different prospective of the Dokis

However some must be canon over the other
Either that or I'm just overthinking this

Honesty, if I had the power to, I'd tell Dan to have Vanna V.A Monika for a DDLC sequel. It just works.














On a serious note, I don't personally like nihilism. It had me in tight spot In my life that really got me slightly depressed, thankfully I have family around me that love and care for me. What really helped me battle my nihilism was a sort of existencial epiphany. I don't think life is meaningless, I think that the meaning to life is: "to impact and be impacted"

My headcannon for the side storys being "unattached" from the main plot is:

Metaverse started a virtual machine at the very beginning of the companys creation. And after the last side story concluded, they saved it and copied it over and over onto other virtual machines, altering each with something different.

So "technically each machine is disconnected from one another"

It also still can factor in the fact monika dosen't have awareness in the side storys. (Effectively the prequel) But in the main game metaverse simply gave her awareness and intentionally left her out as a romance option to see what would happen to the virtual machine.


its not perfect though, like in the main game it feels like all of that character development was just nowhere to be found.

Yeah i just want them to be all happy together before the absolute horror that happens in the main plot.

I'm glad to see someone exploring Monika's nuance, and appreciating her character without excusing everything she did. She was wrong in many ways, but this and her being sympathetic are not mutually exclusive.

"then i'll just make a meaning for myself, and hopefully this can bring happiness for me and or others."

not giving up, not falling into a pessimistic nihilism, but embracing the facts, and using it to make ideal that work better for you.

existialism can be harmful if unprepared, unwilling and alone. but it can be the most liberating and a powerful fondation to support yourself.

I know it's not REALLY part of the video.
but I'd lie if that conclusion wasn't partly inspired by all the existential media I consumed, particularely ddlc, who's antagonist (monika) I relate a lot.
and since then, I never had been more confident in my own self worth, and what I really want in my short and rapidly fading existence.

I'll just post a quote from Dan Salvato on Reddit that backs what's been said around the 16th minute:

"If you are the sort of person who strives to be someone deserving of Monika's love, then that's what she loves about you. Only someone who has lost all hope in themselves is the one condemning Monika' to her own sad, unfulfilled fantasy. If you believe Monika loves you, then you've found in you to love yourself a little bit, and that's what she would want more than anything."

Love is the desire to see someone happy. If we go by this, then your good ending will inevitably be Monika's good ending, despite the tragedies of the game. Monika loves you, but she didn't have the power to make you happy, because she didn't understand you. She only came to an understanding through the only piece of communication that was given to you, which was her deletion.

You, however, have the power to love and understand yourself, and live by her virtues, which is for you not to give up hope and find meaning in what you're doing, as you strive towards your happy ending, controlling your own fate. You have to continue the fight Monika tried to win and make yourself happy, because that's the biggest justice you'd do to her love for you, and that, in my opinion, will be her redemption, because she didn't fight for nothing.

You matter, you are loved, and you're important. Even if you don't think so.

First comment! Cause I had high hopes for this one! Alrighty rare super nerd out moment from me incoming.

Honestly, this video felt a little rushed compared to the rest. I don't blame you for avoiding a lot of Game Theory's well... 'theories' because that's just endless idea crafting, vague data and clickbait.

1. That message of a character experimenting with cutting herself was Monika? What evidence do we have it wasn't Yuri? Because the language used in the message is so simple and blunt?

2. You might be the only person I've seen besides me who pointed out Monika might have powers but she has no idea how to use them well! Not to mention NOT BLAMING the other girls for their behaviour when it's Monika's fault. I'm still kinda annoyed by how MattPatt's early theories tried to throw Yuri under the bus, but that's clickbait for you I guess. Even if Yuri does have 'another side to her' which got buried with this experiment stuff, Monika is still the one who 'untied the knot'

3. This is a big section but I'll try and break it up. The character relationship explanations felt the most rushed here, not to mention you kinda just skimmed over the impact she has on the other characters once she has 'powers'. She might be a tragic now superpowered sad character, but she's also a terrifying one who appears on the surface almost completely fake with her demeanour to her classmates. Personally? That freaks me the fuck out but doesn't seem to for anyone else. Why she does it could be one of these things or a mix

She has one hell of a poker face

Her mind is so broken from the knowledge and powers her emotional tells have gone to crap too so she just puts on a brave face.

The game code only allows her to appear with that body language hence the 'cracked face' experiment later

4. It's easier to have sympathy for Monika when you understand deleting Monika's game file gives Sayori her fate! And Sayori's means of coping is... even more destructive from the get-go... which when you understand her character makes complete sense. Her friends mean the world to her, often more than even her own needs. How can she possibly live up to that when EVERYTHING is just a game and therefore a lie? So she literally ends everything.

5. Personal opinion, but I get the impression that Monika hacked the other characters in the order of how close she was to them and therefore how much of a threat they would be to her plans. Sayori especially! If anyone could have made Monika have a mental breakdown from well-meaning trying to help kindness it would have been her. You could even argue that the decision was also based on characters Monika felt the player would most likely get close to due to personality and other aesthetics but that's not as strong a theory imo.

6. Now comes the part I feel like I'm one of the only people who noticed. Yuri and Natsuki get more and more confused and even afraid of Monika as time goes on.

First because they don't know why everything feels off
Then they suspect it's Monika but don't want to make the situation worse
Then THEY KNOW it's Monika but are terrified, feel trapped (or in Yuri's case she would have if she wasn't too busy being driven insane) and only the player can fix this

This partly feeds into 5. I think Sayori would have picked up on all this before anyone else. We don't know what makes Sayori so empathetic, but we DO know Natsuki is the least empathic of the 4 because she's so used to protecting herself emotionally, so would probably take the longest to pick up on all this. I don't think it's a coincidence Monika doesn't really mess with Natsuki's personality that much unless she's using her like a passed-out puppet. If Monika had gone all out and targeted her first I get the impression she would have actually been the first to speak up.

A real-world equivalent of Monikas nihilism powers dilemma would be something like:

You know your friend is doing something messed up
You don't fully understand so have no idea how to help them.
You want to, but you don't want to make things worse and/or lose that friendship.

And I think I'm out of things to ramble about! Thank you for your efforts! I still think your other 3 videos about DDLC are some of the best on the internet, you just stumbled on this one. It's understandable since Monika is the most mysterious character of the 4 and all the theory crafting and misinformation seems to revolve around her and to a lesser extent Yuri.

I'd be happy if we never got a sequel frankly! Because all the other lore goes into messy 'make it up as we go along' FNAF territory

Firstly, the Monika script was actually the very first one I wrote, and certainly isn’t rushed as I went all out and did things for the video I haven’t been able to do for any other video I’ve created, though I understand the sentiment.
This just definitely isn’t the same kind of video as the other 3.

I do love Game Theory as they are a huge inspiration for me, but I don’t think their theories have much of a place in a video surrounding her psyche.

The message of the character experimenting with self harm was from Monika’s perspective yes, it is confirmed by Dan but also if you get rid of the black cover up in the special poem, it says “I know how Yuri feels now”.

But other than that, even though there are some things I feel I could have done better, Monika is the hardest character to write about, especially because she’s the one I relate to more than any of the others.
The interesting part and what I wanted to write about with Monika is her psychology and the philosophical discussions surrounding her actions, as opposed to all the details.
The things that actually make her…her.
I could have been more clear about some of her reasonings behind what she does in the main game but ultimately it all points to the same reason and discussing how existentialism and nihilism effect her as a whole was important to me because I believe it’s what people can really feel.
