DEARLY DEPARTED
Young Guns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born, I have lived, I will surely die
Facing defeat I'm still holding my head up high
Been deceived into thinking that it's alright
I just needed a reason to reach for the light
Now I've opened, opened, my eyes, Now I see it
The light and I need it

There's no doubt you can yourself out if you want to
Don't turn away, don't be shy, you've got questions so do I
Every day is a chance to change the story
Don't run away, take a shot, give it everything you've got
Without pain, tell me what's the point in glory'

Yesterday just a boy now I stand a man
I'm out on the edge feathers clutched in my hand and I know
That a time will come when all is done
Nothing will remain and so it goes

There's no doubt, you can get yourself out if you want to
When you're on the due, if the current calls you
The jump cos to fall is beneath you, don't turn away, don't be shy
You've got questions so do I, every day is a chance to change the story
Don't run away, take a shot, give it everything you've got
Without pain, tell me what's the point in glory'

Don't run away, don't be shy, you've got questions so do I
Without pain, tell me what's the point in glory'

Overall Meaning

The song "Dearly Departed" by the British rock band Young Guns is a powerful anthem of resilience, determination and hope in the face of adversity. The lyrics speak of the inevitability of death, but emphasize the importance of living life to the fullest and pursuing one's dreams with courage and passion. The first verse sets the tone for the song with the powerful proclamation "I was born, I have lived, I will surely die", which speaks to the impermanence of life and the understanding that every moment is precious. Despite facing defeat, the singer holds their head up high, knowing that they just need a reason to reach for the light - a metaphor for hope, inspiration and positivity.

The chorus of the song is a call to action, encouraging the listener to take control of their lives and pursue their dreams with gusto. Rather than shy away from the challenges and questions that life presents, the singer urges us to face them head on and give it everything we've got. The lyrics "Every day is a chance to change the story, Don't run away, take a shot, give it everything you've got" are particularly inspiring, emphasizing the power of each day to make a difference and the importance of seizing the moment. The idea that without pain, there can be no glory is also a powerful reminder that the things worth achieving often require struggle and sacrifice.

The final verse of the song speaks to the journey of life, from childhood to adulthood and beyond, and the realization that eventually everything must come to an end. Yet, despite this inevitability, the message of the song remains one of hope and empowerment. The repeated refrain "don't run away, don't be shy, you've got questions so do I" speaks to the universality of the human experience and the idea that we can all find strength in each other.

When I lost my kid brother in 2012, this song was one of the major drivers that got me through of the pain and depression I faced at the time. Whenever I listen to this song, the nostalgia isn't associated with pain, but of fond memories of my brother.
I love you guys, I really do!

I can’t believe Bones came out almost 7 years ago. Makes me sad. I blew one of the speakers in my old Z28 when I heard ‘Bones’ on the radio the first time, sitting in a college campus parking lot.
