Suicide
Young Knives Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I looked down from the Carillon
I looked across to the aviary
How long have they been having fun?

I want to be among them
Sitting pretty drinking Evian
I don't think that it will be long
And I will never go down fighting
And I will never go down fighting

I want to do it on the tennis courts
I want to do it where they are playing sport
So they can make sport of this man

Will I find myself traveling?
Will I find myself in therapy?
Or leap and just see where I land

Well, it is cold, cold, cold
(I will never go down fighting)
And I think I'm gonna die in here
Considering Loughborough suicide
(I will never go down fighting)
Which I'm definitely going to do this year

And if you take a look outside
(I will never go down fighting)
Then the answers to your questions seem quite clear
That you may as well leave
(I will never go down fighting)
As there's nothing else to do around here

How long have I been inside?
How long have I been inside?
How long have I been inside?

How long have I been inside?
How long have I been inside?
How long have I been inside?

How long have I been inside?
How long have I been inside?

Well, it is cold, cold, cold
And I, I think I'm gonna die in here
Considering Loughborough suicide
Which I'm definitely going to do this year

And if you take a look outside
Then the answers to your questions seem quite clear
That you may as well leave
As there's nothing else to do around here

Well, it is cold, cold, cold
(I will never go down fighting)
And I think I'm gonna die in here
Considering Loughborough suicide
(I will never go down fighting)
Which I'm definitely going to do this year

And if you take a look outside
(I will never go down fighting)
Then the answers to your questions seem quite clear
That you may as well leave
(I will never go down fighting)
As there's nothing else to do around here

I will never go down fighting
And I will never go down fighting

And I will never go down fighting
And I will never go down fighting

Overall Meaning

The song "Loughborough Suicide" by Young Knives tells the tale of a man who is contemplating ending his life. The first verse describes him looking down from the Carillon tower and across to the aviary while wondering how long people have been having fun without him. He wants to join them, sitting pretty and drinking Evian, but doesn't believe it will be long before he can do so. The man accepts that he will never go down fighting, suggesting that this suicidal ideation has been with him for some time.

In the second verse, the man describes how he wants to end his life on a tennis court where people are playing sport so that they can make sport of him. He questions whether he will find himself traveling or in therapy, or if he should just leap and see where he lands. The cold and isolation of his current situation prompt him to consider the possibility of carrying out a Loughborough suicide, making it clear that he will go through with it this year. The refrain repeats his belief that he will never go down fighting.

Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a person suffering from depression and loneliness, feeling disconnected from those around him and harboring thoughts of suicide. The man portrays a sense of hopelessness, believing that there is nothing else to do around here and accepting his fate.

@pwdplastering2120

I think of this anytime I see a Carillion van. Great song, good times

@ryanfussgaming2740

As good a song as you’ll hear from this indie era

@simulacra007

Saw these guys live whilst volunteer stewarding at a very muddy Y-Not festival in Matlock back in 2009 along with Bombay Bicycle Club and others. I'd seen them perform a cracking set on Jools Holland first and was buzzing when I saw they were playing at the festival. It did nothing but pee it down sideways for 3 days but I was that plastered for most of it that it didn't matter! They were brilliant and I still love em!

@IamRobotMonkey

I'd never heard of these guys, but a friend had a spare ticket, so I went along. Ended up hugging Henry. I don't think either of us will recover.

@george_3264

Same here, except for the hugging henry part, good times

Speaking as a Loughbrarian, I'm about as impressed by your song as you were by my hometown but I guess it adds to the culture.

@edwardlazell3157

I'm guessing the reference to the carillon and the aviary places the opening of the song in Queen's Park.
