Allen lists Karen Carpenter, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Ryan Adams, and Prince as her influences. She co-wrote Echosmith's song, “Goodbye,” the lead single from their second studio album, Inside a Dream.
Young Summer presents a new side of artistry for Bobbie Allen. “It's extremely honest music,” she explains. “It really is no-holds-barred in its honesty. It feels that way when you hear it because that concept is very deliberate. That's the thread that brings all of the songs together and makes them related. It all comes from a very sincere and honest place.”

Waves That Rolled You Under
Young Summer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I got locked in
But I had to go
The balcony was closed
But our minds were open
And it was touch
Feel me breathe in
Go on and touch
Don't be so scared of the things you love.
Diving into waves over deeper waters
Fools from far away
Close enough to fall in
I never could say
I never could say again
What I wanted
I never could see
I never could see the waves
That rolled you under
That rolled you under
It hits me still when you're distant
Out there alone
While the world is stretched, we go
But this time holding strong
Without the rush
You still feel me breathe in
The loss is cut
Don't think too deep in
Don't be so scared of the things you love
Diving into waves over deeper waters
Fools from far away
Close enough to fall in
I never could say
I never could say again
What I wanted
I never could see
I never could see the waves
That rolled you under
That rolled you under
Diving into waves over deeper waters
Fools from far away
Close enough to fall in
I never could say
I never could say again
What I wanted
I never could see
I never could see the waves
That rolled you under
That rolled you under
The lyrics of Young Summer's song Waves That Rolled You Under evoke the feeling of nostalgia and a longing for a past love. The song paints a picture of a night where the singer and her lover were locked in, perhaps in a state of passion, with their minds open and touch being the only communication needed between them. The reference to the balcony being closed suggests that they are enclosed and enveloped in their own world. The lyrics encourage the listener to not be afraid of their feelings - not to think too deep into them and to embrace the things they love.
The chorus is a metaphor for diving into something deeply, without being aware of what is beneath its surface. The reference to "fools from far away" indicates that these two lovers were so caught up in each other that they didn't realize the potential danger they were in. When the singer says that she "never could say again what [she] wanted," she implies that she may have missed her chance to express her feelings to her lover. She also admits that she "never could see the waves that rolled [her lover] under" which means that she couldn't understand the depth of her lover's emotions, perhaps leading to their separation.
In the second half of the song, the singer reflects on the distance that has grown between her and her lover. Despite the pain of the loss, she encourages herself to not think too deeply into the reasons for their separations and to not be afraid of her love. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that the "waves" that roll people under can come from any direction and can be hard to see until it's too late.

It was all a thrill
Everything felt exciting and thrilling
I got locked in
I became involved and invested
But I had to go
But I couldn't stay forever
The balcony was closed
The opportunity had passed
But our minds were open
But we were still open to new experiences
And it was touch
We connected physically
Feel me breathe in
Sense my presence
Go on and touch
Don't hold back from physical connection
Don't think too deep in
Don't overanalyze or get too deep into thoughts or emotions
Don't be so scared of the things you love.
Don't let fear prevent you from pursuing what you love
Diving into waves over deeper waters
Risking everything for a deeper and more meaningful experience
Fools from far away
Love can make us foolish, even from a distance
Close enough to fall in
Close enough to get caught up and fall in love
I never could say
I was never able to express
What I wanted
What I truly desired
I never could see
I was never able to understand
The waves that rolled you under
The struggles and hardships that overwhelmed you
It hits me still when you're distant
I still feel the pain of distance between us
Out there alone
Separated from me and without support
While the world is stretched, we go
While the world changes and expands, we continue on
But this time holding strong
But this time we are resilient and steadfast
Without the rush
Even without the initial excitement
You still feel me breathe in
You still sense my presence
The loss is cut
The pain of loss is reduced

I usually listen to hardcore hip hop, and rap, but my mom hates that type of music. So when i started driving her to her radiation treatments i would play indie pop on pandora. This song came on, and when it was done my mom said “that was a nice song”. I’d play your music everytime i took her to treatment, and been a fan ever since. This song here gets my eyes all watery now everytime i listen to it, and makes me wish she was still around.
@YoungSummer

Yomna Hassan thank you so much. Hopefully your mum can recover. I will pray for you, and your family. Just do tell your mum how much she means to you while she is here. I held back because I did not want my mum to think i was giving up on her recovery. Biggest mistake of my life. I should of poured my heart out when I had the chance.
