Evil & Harm
Younger Brother Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I assure you, that with the help of God, I will let war on you in every place and in every way that I can. And I will subject you to the yoke and obedience of the church. And I will take you peasants and women and your children and I will make them slaves. And I will make them slaves. And I will do you all the evils and harms which I can.

They've taken so much. They've taken the guardians of the sun and the stars, the world will go black.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "Evil & Harm" by Younger Brother paint a picture of a violent, oppressive ruler who is seeking to exert their power over their subjects. The opening lines, which describe the singer's intent to make war on his enemies in every way possible, set the tone for the rest of the song. The use of the phrase "with the help of God" shows that the singer sees themselves as justified in their actions and believes that they have the backing of a higher power.

The next lines, in which the singer speaks of subjecting their enemies to the "yoke and obedience of the church", show the extent to which they are willing to go in order to exert control over others. The use of the word "peasants" to describe their enemies shows a disdain for those who are seen as lower-class or less powerful.

The final lines of the song, which speak of the sun and stars being taken away and the world going black, provide a powerful image of the devastating effects that such actions would have on the world. It is clear that the singer's actions are not just harmful to their enemies, but to the wider world as well.

Overall, "Evil & Harm" is a haunting portrayal of a ruthless leader willing to do whatever it takes to maintain their power and control over others.

Evil & Harm...a perfect tune of what is it about, in a veeery psychedelic way. A Flock of Bleeps is one of the most extraordinary albums ever written. Thank you to the genius, thank you Twisted Music :)

Younger Brother is how the Kogi people of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia call the foreign civilizations. Kogi believe that Sierra is the Heart of The World and they are the Elder Brothers, children of The Great Mother who care for her, while the Younger Brothers are her children weakening her by plundering and exploiting the Earth. The title of this song is a reference to a quote of Rodrigo de Bastidas during the founding of Santa Marta, a Colombian city on the foothill of Sierra where conquistadors first came in contact with Tairone culture of which the Kogi are descendants. In his speech, De Bastidas pledges that "he will do them(the natives) all the evils and harms which he can", at which the song hints with its title. This is simply a wonderful piece of music with an ancient and meaningful story behind.

I strongly recommend that anyone interested watch the BBC documentary "From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers' Warning" to see how a wise and peaceful community is the Kogi.
