Your Memorial Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As long as the old self is there its taint will be over all we do. We try to be religious and become pharisees. We try to be kind and become patronizing. Social service ends in red tape of officialdom. Unselfishness becomes a form of showing off. I don't mean of course that we're to stop trying to be good. We've got to do the best we can...
The real cure lies far deeper. Out of our self and into Christ we must go."
The lyrics in Your Memorial's song Transfiguration speak about the process of transformation that happens when one undergoes the Christian life. The song relates the process to the story of the transfiguration in the Bible, where Jesus was transformed before his disciples, and speaks about how our natural selves must be changed into a Christ self through this process. The lyrics also reveal that this process is ongoing and takes time, and that one's personal desires, point of view and character must undergo a change for this transformation to happen completely.
The song further delves into the effects of the old self that can still linger within us, even when we are trying to be religious or kind. It suggests that this can cause us to become judgmental or patronizing, and that even acts of altruism can become ways for us to show off. The lyrics emphasize the need for a deeper cure, one that involves moving out of oneself and into Christ. In essence, the song highlights the idea that true transformation happens when one puts aside their own self-interests and embraces the teachings of Jesus.
