There's a trick to it

You gotta let it hit the tip of your tongue first, then let the liquid dodge about 1 cm of your tongue, and allow it to hit at between the middle and front of your tongue but much further to the front. Then, you want to make it jump all the way to the back half of the top of your mouth. If you do it somewhat as such, wine will taste good.

Smelling the cork:

No quicker way to make it known you don’t know much about wine.

“Cork Etiquette” (like lots of other things) is a holdover from prohibition. When presented with the cork, you should be inspecting it for a few things, but not smell.

1. Does the cork have coloration from the wine? If so, you can be sure the bottle was stored properly so that the contents did not prematurely oxidize.

2. Does the cork match the bottle? This is the prohibition holdover. Back when the government ruled no fun drinks allowed, people had to get crafty with making wine, as it was effectively illegal to do so. So, people out to make bad booze bucks would make wine in their bathtubs, scrounging whatever used bottles & corks they could find, trying to pass it off as the real thing. If the cork matches the bottle, you’re much more likely to be paying for the real thing, and not grape juice from a tub where people scrub their ass.

My great uncle was French, but lived in America in his later years. He loved wine, was basically part of his soul, would have a couple glasses every day with lunch and dinner. He would go on tasting tours whenever he could. If it was a party, he'd go through bottle after bottle filling everyone's drinks till we simply had to refuse or we'd all be staggering drunk. You know what his favorite brand of wine was near the end of his time? Barefoot. At that time the going price was about $9 US.

I'm a chemist for a winery and can 100% say, that even within the industry, most people can't identify wine by taste or aroma alone. Vintage doesn't matter too much for large wine producers, because their goal is to produce a wine that is similar, if not exact, in taste to what they have produced in the past. You get more "variety" with smaller wineries.

Yes it happens but I was a real wine drinker and I personally found that wine at that price tastes awful. It is a matter of taste my favorite whines were Rhône wines which tend to have a very metallic earthy flavor and it was worth the money to buy something I knew I was going to enjoy.

Honestly, some 12$ wine I tasted was pretty good, like a real enjoyable drink that accompanies a meal. A 1000$ dollar wine, by comparison, would have to be the sweetest most holy delicious beautiful drop of beverage I've ever tasted in my entire life, better than any food or anything I've ever tasted in any capacity - if it's worth it's price. And idk, I just don't see wine of all things being the most delicious thing possible. Maybe a steak? Or some cookie? ... but even then, considering how good I've eaten for like 20 bucks, I'd say the maximum in terms of tastiness a human can experience would be at like 300$ tops. Things are rarely as they seem. Snobbery for example is not practiced by people who are into a thing for the thing. Snobbery is practiced by people who are into what they think the thing says about them. They rarely understand or appreciate the thing, and their only authority is on insecurity.
Snobbery is also a great tool for mass marketing. The truth is that there's wine that's poor, wine that's OK and wine that's delicious. That delicious market is very real and controlled tighter than a snare drum by people with real money. That fact is unhelpful when you sell lesser wine. If you can be made to believe that all wine is more or less the same and that snobbery is the distinguishing factor, you can drink plonk free of envy and enjoy yourself. The restaurant bit about the food pairings reminds me of a story my dad told me once. He was at a fancy restaurant with my mother and was thinking about ordering some expensive Duckworth wine. The waiter, being a good person, stopped him and told him that the people who make Duckworth also make another wine called Decoy, which is made in the same winery, from the same vineyard, with the same grapes, etc. The only difference is that Decoy (if I remember correctly) is just made from leftover grapes that weren’t able to make it into Duckworth. There’s no lesson to this story, but I just thought it was funny.

I forgot to mention that the Decoy wine was much cheaper and tasted just as good! (I know that could have probably been inferred, but I thought I would mention it anyway.)

To be real for a sec: as someone who goes to art fairs and craft shows yeah there's a markup and sometimes you get those overly soulful starving artist types, but overall all they're folks with a hobby. They wanna make money, but often they'll run sales and package deals and like Internet Historian said at the end about hobbies that's the fun of local art markets. Chatting with artists and getting their business info, striking deals, finding unique gifts, the story and memories of it all; it ends up worth more than just $20 bucks.

As a "young" wine maker (my grandparents have wine at their house) who has been helping them make wine for 30+ years (i`m 32), I can tell you that wine tasting is bullshit. My grandfather took me to a wine competition, where he took 3 bottles of wine made from the same year and labeled them 5 years apart and the wine sipping "judges" told a lot of crap about aromas and year aging. He won 2 and 3-rd places with the same freaking wine made that year. So yeah..the best wine is the "wine you like"

This sounds almost like this showing of 2 paintings to the "art reviewers" where authors names were swapped. One was a bad painting made by a good and known painter (allegedly) and the other was a good painting made by someone unknown in these circles. "Reviewers" applauded this terrible fucking painting that was clearly not even matching that painter's art style whatsoever because they were attached to the artist name being recognized. In reality the good painting was made by the known and respected artist.

As in, reviewing something as subjective as art is a terrible idea.

Great video, though i do think wine pairings aren't complete bs. Wines vary in sweetness, acidity or just how intense the flavour is, trying to find something that's the right sweetness and acidity to complement the dish can absolutely make a difference. At least in the case of tasting menus at fancy restaurants that's the case, in most places you should just order what you enjoy.

Would have been nice to go into expensive wine collecting because that's almost a different category altogether. It's more like stamp collecting than making your own coffee.

That's hilarious (and a little sad, when status becomes more important than the quality of the wine). In our restaurant, we serve all kinds of delicious wines from all over the world, but my personal favourite is a full Chardonnay which comes from.. California! (brewed by a German family) near the San Francisco bay. I think it's actually incredible how many lesser known countries and their wines are becoming more and more popular in Europe in general. Eastern-European wines, for example, don't slouch!
A Little tangent I know, but it just goes to show that there is definitely still a lot of elitist wine snobbery going on.

It's a shame you didn't mention brandy. Wine is alcohol produced by yeast from the fermentation of fruit sugars, typically grapes. Brandy is the further distillation of that wine, cooking off the remaining sugars to create a stronger, smoother liquor. It's basically fancy European moonshine, but weaker -- around 70-140 proof.

I just say I like a sweet red blend. When the snobs tell me dry is far better, I tell them I use that for cooking. They immediately panic because they now have to prove they are either so classy their chef cooks for them and they dont know which wines to cook with, or they are so unclassy they dont know what wine to cook with. On the off chance you get someone who is like a high end chef and they ask, oh... what dish? you just say you like it with pasta dishes... nothing too fancy... this looks like youre feigning modesty and they look like pricks if they pressure you more.
