Yves Duteil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The first line of Yves Duteil's song, "C'est moi qui ai choisi ce chemin difficile," translates to "I chose this difficult path myself." The singer is reflecting on their journey, stopping just short of a cliff and looking calmly into the void. They are not afraid, however, because they have the support of someone they love - "c'est de tenir ta main" - holding their hand they know they can continue.

As they set out for the next leg of the journey, they note that the path becomes increasingly narrow and steep. Nevertheless, they put their whole heart into finding the way - "En mettant tout mon cœur à trouver le sentier" - and the path snakes its way through the height of summer. The singer recalls reaching a moment of peace with someone they love when they "poséd [their] valises and [their] coeurs" before preparing to return to the city to share news with their reflection in the "mirror of happiness." Since this person came into their life, they say they have filled their life with meaning and stopped weeping because they shared their pain with them.

The singer takes flight above a landscape shrouded in autumn leaves in the final verse before coming across four wooden homes, a forest fence, and a world shrouded in silence. They hear muffled voices and the cries of birds as they resolve to continue through the secrets of life and time until they find a place where nothing is impossible. The final line of the song echoes the penultimate: "Et j'en rapporterai ce qui te manque ici" - "And I will bring back what is missing here."
