You Didn't Say A Word
Yvonne Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't deny we were dancing close together
Too close it seemed to be talking 'bout the weather
I was so happy when
The moment you walked in
I felt so good inside
Until you walked on by

Didn't say a word
Oh, no, you didn't say a word

I'm sure he knew that I was waiting there for you to come
He saw me sitting there and knew that I was lonesome
That's when you came along
But what you thought was wrong
I tried to catch your eye
You stared and you walked on by

And you didn't say a word
Ah no, you didn't say a word

Just telling him all about you
You trusted and loved me too
You made it all a lie
You turned and you walked on by

Didn't say a word
Ah no, you didn't say a word

Ah no, you didn't say a word
Ah no, you didn't say a word

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Yvonne Baker's song "You Didn't Say A Word" describe a situation where the singer and their love interest were dancing close together, but the latter chose not to acknowledge them. The singer was excited when their love interest walked into the room, but that excitement turned into disappointment when they didn't stop to talk or say anything at all. Moreover, the singer mentions that someone else knew they were sitting and waiting there for their love interest to arrive, which indicates that perhaps they were not alone in their infatuation.

The lyrics go on to express betrayal and hurt when the singer finds out that their love interest had been sharing intimate details of their relationship with someone else. The line "You made it all a lie" suggests that the love interest had been leading the singer on and their feelings weren't genuine. The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "Ah no, you didn't say a word", indicating that the singer's love interest never showed any indication of reciprocating their feelings.

Overall, the song is a melancholic portrayal of unrequited love and the pain that comes with it. It touches on themes of betrayal, loneliness, and the feeling of being led on. The catchy melody and Yvonne Baker's soulful voice add to the emotional resonance of the song.

This is another one that sends shivers down my spine - the world would be a cold, dark place without Northern Soul.

In the late 70's I was an original South London soulhead. I remember friends going upnorth but I didn't get it.... forward 40 years I go to my first Northern Soul nite.. and it blew my mind! I couldn't stop dancing and kept thinking why didn't I get into this earlier. I taught myself to dance to NS by watching others and listening to the music. Now most people think I'm an original northern soulie 😁. I am so so glad I got into the scene 💕💕💕 I've never met such lovely people and I'll be dancing into my 80's.

I heard this legendary track just a few hours ago on BBC ‘Northern Soul at the Proms’ I couldn’t believe they did a whole NS show at the Royal Albert Hall. It brought the house down, they should do it every year as a tradition. I wish I’d bought tickets to see it live, the cover singers and RAH orchestra did great renditions of all the classic stompers. A few old NS fans keeping the faith jiving in the limited space they had, bless them ❤️

Luckily I managed to get tickets for the BBC Proms Northern Soul Night-it was a fantastic atmosphere. One of the best concerts I've ever attended.Had to get up & dance! Couldn't believe it when Lavanna Mclean-the 'Soul Girl'- DJ & dancer ends up sitting next to me! She is so lovely!

@@shu48p25 Oh, wow! Is that the pretty blonde woman who does the ‘dance anywhere’ vids? The Gods must’ve smiled upon you that day, he knew the Northern folks were in town 😊
