She may be best known for originating the role of Mary Magdalene in the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Her biggest success came in 1977 with her #1 hit from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, "If I Can't Have You" which was also written by the Bee Gees. The huge success of the latter song has resulted in Elliman being remembered as a disco artist, though this style of music was an exception to the medium-tempo ballads that she specialized in, and which comprised the bulk of her recordings.

Having grown up with the original double album, this song was not a part of the original work. I finally got to see the film version on TV my sophomore year in high school. Was so completely unprepared for this song. I was mesmerized and blown away by it's beauty and cinematography. Back then, I had to wait every year during easter when this would air, and I'd wait and wait to hear this song again; beautifully sung...then gone. STUNNING!!!!

Beautiful and powerful scene portraying the fearful separation that Mary Magdalene, Peter and the rest of the Apostles are feeling between themselves and Jesus. Everyone is saying this song makes them cry but I think it's hilarious. The disciples are consistently portrayed as clueless, shallow idiots and this song just encapsulates it. They have no idea what Jesus is about and they're wringing their hands about what he's doing. The lyrics are so funny. "I think you've made your point now." This musical and Godspell came out in the middle of the Jesus Freak movement of the late 60s and 70s. It’s interesting to rewatch these two after watching the movie The Jesus Revolution. Could we start again please and regain the excitement, the vision, the hopefulness of that time? We’ve gone from “Jesus is Alright” to Christians being a minority who can’t even read the Bible in the public library.
