As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

The lyrics of Zé Ramalho's song A Terceira Lâmina speak about a third message or warning that will come to the people, one that will be more peaceful and with some parts of life, but that will hurt. It will come with the hunger of the people and with the hard and enduring seed that is kept alive by the fire of the whole community. The message will be a result of the silence and inaction of those who are just hanging in there, forgetting the moments and the depth of the well where they are at the bottom. The message will then become like a war in the mind of men, with fear and courage competing against each other. It will come to the man who was already distant from the earth and whose thoughts will start to be devoured by the beast.
The lyrics convey the message that years will go by until the people will realize that they need to come out of the well and their throats and climb up with the help of a singer's voice. The repetition of the chorus "A Terceira Lâmina" and "Ê ah, ô uô" brings a feeling of urgency and importance to the message that needs to be heard and understood. The song speaks about the struggle of the people against their own world, and how it takes years to realize that they need to come together and fight together.
