As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.
Botas de Sete Léguas

Que calçam botas de sete léguas
Que sacrificam sem darem tréguas
O nosso triste quadro social
São habitantes de um planeta
Avariado pelo câncer industrial
Em canivetes que rasgam
No carnaval
Na cor amorfa da poluição
Indiferentes ao estrondo de um trator
De um motor
Vocês sabiam dos motores, dos espaços
De tantos salmos de salomão
Vocês sabiam das sete portas
Da tentação
Desse dinheiro que não lhe compra
Um riso claro do seu amor
Sem xique-xique e sem cardeiro
Sem coroar a festa desse rei
Tantos torneios e dados que joguei
Pela memória de um computador
Vocês sabiam dos gigantes?
Que calçam botas de sete léguas
Que sacrificam sem darem tréguas
O nosso triste quadro social
São habitantes de um planeta
Avariado pelo câncer industrial
Em canivetes que rasgam, que cortam
No carnaval

The lyrics of "Botas de Sete Léguas" by Zé Ramalho reflect on the destructive impact of industrialization on society and the environment. The opening line sets the tone for the rest of the song, asking if the listeners are aware of the giants who wear boots made for walking seven leagues (a measurement of distance equivalent to approximately 20 miles). These giants symbolize the industrialized world, which relentlessly exploits natural resources and people to fuel economic growth. They show no mercy and sacrifice indiscriminately, referring to the social injustices and ecological devastation that are inherent in this model.
Ramalho goes on to describe these giants as inhabitants of a damaged planet affected by "cancerous" industrialization, a theme that he revisits several times throughout the song. The use of canivetes (knives) and carne fria e enlatada (cold and canned meat) in reference to the Carnival festivities highlights the paradox of the modern world: while we celebrate and indulge in material abundance, we are also complicit in the exploitation and destruction of the earth and its inhabitants.
The second verse emphasizes the power dynamics involved in this system, with money being the currency of exchange but unable to buy true happiness or love. The phrase "sem xique-xique e sem cardeiro" (without prickly pear and without mutton) refers to the lavish banquets that accompany the reign of a king, suggesting that we have become so enamored with material wealth that we have lost touch with the simple pleasures of life.
Overall, the song can be seen as a call to action, urging listeners to wake up to the destructive impact of modernization and to prioritize sustainability, justice, and compassion in our interactions with each other and with the planet.
