As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

Dê-me seu dinheiro que eu quero viver
Dê-me seu relógio que eu quero saber
Quanto tempo falta para lhe esquecer
Quanto vale um homem para amar você
Minha profissão é suja e vulgar
Quero um pagamento para me deitar
Junto com você estrangular meu riso
Baby
Nossa relação acaba-se assim
Como um caramelo que chegasse ao fim
Na boca vermelha de uma dama louca
Pague meu dinheiro e vista sua roupa
Deixe a porta aberta quando for saindo
Você vai chorando e eu fico sorrindo
Conte pras amigas que tudo foi mal
Nada me preocupa de um marginal
Baby
Nossa relação acaba-se assim
Como um caramelo que chegasse ao fim
Na boca vermelha de uma dama louca
Pague meu dinheiro e vista sua roupa
Deixe a porta aberta quando for saindo
Você vai chorando e eu fico sorrindo
Conte pras amigas que tudo foi mal
Nada me preocupa de um marginal
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Zé Ramalho's song "Garoto de aluguel" tells the story of a male prostitute who asks a woman for her money, watch, and love to forget about her. He sees his profession as dirty and vulgar and expects payment for sex. He wants to be with the woman but suppresses his emotions by saying that he doesn't need her love. The woman pays him and leaves, and he advises her to tell her friends that things didn't go well. In the end, he doesn't care about his status as a marginal or the woman's feelings; he only cares about the pay he receives.
The song's lyrics highlight the grim realities of sex work and the emotional toll it takes on those who engage in it. The singer's detachment from his emotions and his lack of concern for the woman are reflective of the emotional distancing necessary for survival in sex work. The lyrics also criticize the societal stigmas that push people towards prostitution and how it is often viewed as a last resort for people in poverty, and this song sheds light on the harsh realities of sex work in Brazil.

Quem nunca se sentiu um garoto ou uma garota de aluguel, estar com a pessoa ñ por dinheiro, mais por migalhas de carinho ou atenção, essa música me remete a esse tipo de situação.
