As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

Zé Ramalho é um cantor e compositor brasileiro, conhecido como uma das principais vozes da geração nordestina que surgiu nos anos 70.
Em 1960, mudou-se com a família para a cidade de João Pessoa. Zé estudou nos melhores colégios da cidade e, ao terminar o ensino básico, iniciou o curso de medicina.
Zé Ramalho começou sua carreira artística escrevendo versos de cordel. Cantava em conjuntos inspirados na Jovem Guarda e no Rock inglês.
No ano de 1976, Zé se mudou para o Rio de Janeiro. Em 1977, gravou seu primeiro álbum solo, intitulado “Zé Ramalho”, que incluía a música “Avôhai”, composta em homenagem a seu avô.
