As with many musicians back in his younger days, he was first influenced by rock and roll; however, at the age of 20, his music took a more Northeastern Brazilian approach (forro, folk). Zé Ramalho's lyrics however, are very influenced by the socio-economic difficulties faced by the average Brazilian.
In 1975, he recorded his first album, Paêbirú along with Lula Côrtes through the label Rozenblit. Today the copies from this very rare vinyl are highly-priced in the international collector's market.

Overdriver (Duo)
Quanto tempo o coração leva pra saber
E quantos segredos traz
O coração de uma mulher?
Como é triste a tristeza
Mendigando um sorriso
Um cego procurando a luz
Na imensidão do paraíso
Quem tem amor na vida
Tem sorte
Quem na fraqueza sabe
Ser bem mais forte
Ninguém sabe dizer onde a felicidade está
Hm
O amor é feito de paixões
E quando perde a razão
Não sabe quem vai machucar
Quem ama nunca sente medo
De contar o seu segredos
Sinônimo de amor é amar
O amor é feito de paixões
E quando perde a razão
Não sabe quem vai machucar
Quem ama nunca sente medo
De contar o seu segredos
Sinônimo de amor é amar
Quem revelará o mistério
Que tem a fé
E quantos segredos traz
O coração de uma mulher?
Como é triste a tristeza
Mendigando um sorriso
Um cego procurando a luz
Na imensidão do paraíso
O amor é feito de paixões
E quando perde a razão
Não sabe quem vai machucar
Quem ama nunca sente medo
De contar o seu segredos
Sinônimo de amor é amar
O amor é feito de paixões
E quando perde a razão
Não sabe quem vai machucar
Quem ama nunca sente medo
De contar o seu segredos
Sinônimo de amor é amar
O coração de uma mulher
Wow, show (yeah)
The lyrics to Zé Ramalho's song "Sinônimos" explore the complex and often contradictory nature of love. The first verse asks how long it takes for the heart to realize that love and suffering are synonyms, suggesting that pain is an unavoidable part of the experience of loving someone. The verse goes on to compare love to a bed of roses that can also hold thorns, and describes the sense of loneliness that can accompany even great wealth, fame, or admiration.
The second verse describes love as a passion that can override reason and logic, causing people to lose control over their emotions and potentially hurt others. However, it also argues that true love is fearless and unafraid to reveal its secrets or vulnerabilities. The third verse reflects on the mystery of faith and the unknown depths of a woman's heart, painting a picture of sadness and longing that juxtaposes the idea of paradise. The final verse ends on a hopeful note, suggesting that love is a source of strength and happiness for those lucky enough to have it.
Overall, the song's lyrics convey a mix of emotions, highlighting both the joy and pain that love can bring. It suggests that love is both a complicated and essential aspect of human experience, and that despite its many challenges, it is ultimately something to be cherished and celebrated.
