Sehnsucht
Z. Randall Stroope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seine Arbeit die ist hartes Brot
Er fährt weit weg für seinen Lohn
Denn er will seinen Kindern ja was bieten

Strahlst Du Dank Gottes Hand

Hier will er leben, hier will er einmal sterben

Sehnsucht nach Schlesien
Du geliebtes Heimatland
Im Herzen von Europa
Strahlst Du Dank Gottes Hand

Tęsknota za Sląskiem
Oh Täler weit, Oh grüner Wald
Sehnsucht nach Schlesien
ich komm nach Haus schon bald

Tęsknota za Sląskiem
Oh Täler weit, Oh grüner Wald
Sehnsucht nach Schlesien

ich komm nach Haus schon bald
ich komm nach Haus schon bald

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Z. Randall Stroope's song Sehnsucht tell the story of a man who works hard to earn a living and provide for his family. He learned a different trade, but it is no longer worth anything in today's world. Despite this, he willingly works hard out of love for his family. The man dreams of his small village, located between the woods, fields, meadows, and hills. He longs for his homeland, Schlesien, where he wants to live and eventually die. He dreams of seeing the castle of Eichendorff and standing in prayer on Sankt Annaberg. He longs for simple pleasures, such as enjoying schlesischen Klößen (a type of dumpling) and traveling along the Oder. The song ultimately expresses a deep and powerful longing for one's place of origin, despite the difficulties that come with leaving.

The lyrics of Sehnsucht reflect the emotion of Sehnsucht, a German term focused on the concept of "longing" that was popularized in the Romantic Movement. Sehnsucht describes an intense yearning for something that is difficult or impossible to attain. This idea is expressed throughout the lyrics, as the man longs for his homeland and culture, even though he is physically far away from it. Additionally, the lyrics showcase the importance of family and the sacrifices people make for those they love.

Z. Randall Stroope conducted my District choir in 2007-2008... Sang this and Gloria. Just how I remembered too; he put the same musicality in those as he did my choir... Bravo!
