A born performer, to see Z-Star (aka Zee Gachette) live is a deeply moving experience. She conducts the energy onstage and offstage effortlessly, it can be as still as a slow burning candle or as explosive as a Molotov. Always spontaneous her live shows are never the same, she’s profoundly magical and very entertaining. With a soaring voice in a class of its own, her self-penned acoustic guitar anthems range from; the theatrical to wild fun-fuelled dance mash-ups to evocative evergreens, and are a testament to her understated musical genius. As a producer, she has a talent for creating deep hypnotic soundtracks that mix Soul Jazz Blues Bossa Roots & Rock one unmistakable sound.
Born in East-London to Trinidadian parents, her passion for music is a family affair. Her uncles Michael Timothy (MD Massive Attack) and Steve Nichol (Loose Ends) are both top UK musicians. Her late mother the celebrated Black Model/Entrepreneur ‘Schultzi’ bought her first piano and taught her the ropes. However it is her grandfather Al Timothy whom Zee has most in common with…a flamboyant talent for theatrics and improvisation. The saxman jammed with jazz greats Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk and wrote the hit single “Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me” for Shirley Bassey.
Zee’s two prior solo albums, ‘Voodoo Dragon Risin’ and ‘Who Loves Lives’ received great reviews at home and abroad the latter was released on EMI and reached Top 20 in the Italian charts . Her music has been championed by global Radio Stations UK’s Radio One (Gilles Petersen Worldwide), LA’s KCRW, Radio Nova in Paris and Radio dj Italy. She has recorded, supported and performed with…Terry Callier, Gabin, Angelique Kidjo, Max Sedgely, Noa, Bluey Maunick, Natacha Atlas, Sinead O’Connor, Omar, George Benson, Keziah Jones, Meshell Ndegeocello, Nigel Kennedy, Mauro Pagani, Richie Havens, and Roachford. Performing at venues such as Royal Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Jazz Café, Ronnie Scots, Roskilde, Glastonbury, Festival Bar, Mtv Live, Temple Bar LA and alongside Beverley Knight and Isabella Rossellini in the Vagina Monologes.
Under the alias Lady-Z (a nickname given to her by Callier) she co-produced the electro-soul sound of SLOWTRAINSOUL with Danish Grammy-nominated producer Morten Varano. The duo have achieved huge success worldwide releasing 2 albums with combined compilation sales of over 2m (Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar, and Nirvana Lounge). Her music has also been featured on US TV sitcoms ’Ugly Betty’, ‘CSI’, ‘Californication’ and ‘Six Feet Under’.
