After the band's popularity reached new heights in late 1980s, spurred on by the televised version of Top Lista Nadrealista, the Yugoslav Civil War which saw the breakup of the band, with one off-shoot continuing to work in Belgrade (now under the name No Smoking Orchestra, at first using an original name), and the other in Zagreb, using the original name. Nevertheless, many of the songs of Zabranjeno Pušenje have attained an anthemic status and their music remains popular across former Yugoslavia.

Okružni sudija rek'o 12 godina, 12 godina strogog zatvora.
Okružni sudija rek'o 12 godina, 12 godina strogog zatvora.
Tužna je moja sudbina, ženu mi krećo Hakija.
Krećo Hakija presudila mu cakija, ne razumiješ ti to druže sudija.
Krećo Hakija presudila mu cakija, ne razumiješ ti to druže sudija.
(Džabe ja to tebi pričam)
Zenico mrzim svaki kamen tvoj, zbog tebe ja mrzim život svoj.
Ko preživi 12 godina u KP domu Zenica, taj je pravi Hadžija.
Ko preživi 12 godina u KP domu Zenica, taj je pravi Hadžija.
(Hvala Mujo)
Raduje me jedna istina, iz KP doma vratit ću se ja
Ali Hakija nikad neće sa Bara, sa Bara se niko ne vraća.
Ali Hakija nikad neće sa Bara, sa Bara se niko ne vraća.
The lyrics of Zabranjeno Pušenje's song "Zenica blues" talk about the struggles of the singer who was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the district judge. Every time he goes to Zenica, he is followed by 5-6 policemen. The singer is bitter towards Zenica as every stone reminds him of the life he lost due to his sentence. He hates everything about Zenica, including his own life, blaming the town for all his misfortunes.
The singer's fate is deeply tied to the story of his friend Hakija who was given a death sentence by the "cakija", a slang word for a bribe or an illegal decision maker. The singer blames the district judge for not understanding the essence of Hakija's case, and he thinks it's pointless to explain it to him. As the singer speaks about his life in prison, he acknowledges the fact that lasting 12 years in KP prison in Zenica is no small feat, and whoever does so, deserves to be called a true "Hadžija."
The last stanza of the song conveys hope as the singer talks about returning to his life after his sentence is over. He is confident that he will come back, but at the same time, he acknowledges that his friend Hakija won't be able to join him from the Bara, which means he has died, or will never return, highlighting the permanent consequences of one's actions.

When I'll be on my way to Zenica (a Bosnian city with one of Europe's most feared prisons)
Five-six cops will follow me
The district judge said 12 years
12 years of strict jail
My fate is sad
Hakija was turning my wife
Hakija was turning, the jackknife judged him
You don't understand that mr. judge
There's no point of me telling you that
Zenica, I hate every your stone
Because of you I'm hating my life
The one who survives 12 years
In the Zenica Prison
That one is a real Hadžija (person worth respect)
One truth is making me happy
I'll return from the KP Dom (Official name of the prison)
But Hakija will never from the Bare (Main graveyard in Sarajevo)
Noone is returning from the Bare
