Leaving Love Behind
Zac Brown Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Although the years have changed now, and we go by different names
I remember the sound of our roof in the rain
And my mind goes back in time to a place so far gone
Where the love we left behind us was still new

We were listening to the record on the end of your bed
Not giving thought to where it was all going
And I wished right then and there so badly I could read your mind
Just so I could know the things that you were knowin'

I believe, yes I do
The hardest part is always leaving love behind
I believe, yes I do
That everything we lose will be a gift in time
But the hardest part is leaving love behind

When it was time to say goodbye, those words came down like stones
I admit, for so long after, it was hard to feel at home
We would hear the highway's song shiftin' down in the night
I was grateful that the echoes broke the quiet

I believe, yes I do
The hardest part is always leaving love behind
I believe, yes I do
That everything we lose will be a gift in time
But the hardest part is leaving love behind

The sun fades on me now and I miss you like words can't know
And I missed my shot at dying young a long time ago
It's just a lesson learned in love, it's not angry it's not sad
Some time you have to lose somethin' to know what you have

I believe (I believe), yes I do
The hardest part is always leaving love behind
I believe (I believe), yes I do
Oh, that everything we lose will be a gift in time

(I believe) I believe, (yes I do)
The hardest part is always leaving love behind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Leaving Love Behind" by Zac Brown Band narrate a story of love that still lingers on even after the years have passed, and the two lovers have gone separate ways. The singer remembers their old home and the sound of the rain on the roof, and even though he and his partner have moved on and changed, he still longs for what they once had. He recounts a time when they were lying on the bed, listening to a record, wishing he could read into his lover's mind to know what she's thinking. The words of goodbye weighed heavily and made it hard for him to feel at home, but he realized that letting go of love is a necessary part of life.

The chorus, "the hardest part is always leaving love behind," is repeated twice, emphasizing the significant role love plays in our lives. The singer believes that losing someone or something we love is painful, but we must accept it as a gift of time.

The song's overall theme could be interpreted as a message of accepting the past and coming to terms with loss, even though it's difficult. The song has a melancholic tone and beautifully highlights the complexity of human emotions.

Okay but MINUTE MARK 2:33 is one of the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard. it moves me. Clipped & names it Sob to the Heavens. Survived him, lost half of her, had my heart ripped out of me, felt like I was dying, yet I live. God gave me back 10 years.

There are very few songs that trigger emotions the moment you hear them. One for example is The Dance by Garth Brooks. This one is right up there along with it. I am a happily married father of three, but over 20 years ago I wet through a broken engagement that was not meant to be and there are tears in my eyes as I type this. Unbelievable song by an Incredibly talented band. I love every song ZBB puts out. Well done guys!
