Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Zacarias Ferreira's song "El Comparon" tells the story of a man called El Comparon, who was a notorious drinker and troublemaker. He went to a disco one night without any money and thought of promising to pay the bartender the next day. The bartender, however, was not impressed with his promise and insulted him, leading to a physical altercation. El Comparon then went to another club, where he picked up a woman not realizing that she was the wife of a colonel. This led to another altercation, and he had to run away to the Malecon.

At the Malecon, he saw a beautiful woman and kissed her, only to find out that she was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and did not tolerate any foolishness. She attacked him, and he had to run away once again. The lyrics portray El Comparon as a self-destructive character who always finds himself in trouble due to his drinking and womanizing ways.

The song's lyrics highlight the consequences of reckless behavior, especially in a society where machismo is prevalent. It also touches on the idea of consequences catching up with people who live recklessly, as El Comparon is always on the run. In this way, the song can be seen as a commentary on Dominican society, where machismo is often romanticized, but the reality of its consequences is ignored.
