Into the Valley
Zack Hemsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Monuments atop the summit of the mind
But stone pillars turn to dust when attention shines
That granite chips when the point of observation pries
Them cornerstones are prone to crumble right before our eyes
Now that's the truth in lies
Grave deceptions are but servants of the wise
Deluded in our grandeur like a fool that's in disguise
But strip away the surface and reveal the great divide
Between the ornaments of culture and the meaning of our lives

Before we lay in ash
I feel ascension giving way at last
Into the valley once more now we go
Into the gray, into the ground down below

You can search the afterlife for pearly gates
But only manner of the earth can serve to wipe the slate
Reject what's given or accept it, that's the choice you make
But destinations are determined by the steps we take
So make that great escape
That fixed belief it will fracture before it changes shape
That chain holds firm up until it shatters amidst the ties you break
Don't root your feet or you'll never manage to slide and shift your weight
Turn about face and imagine what can happen, see that's the twist of fate
They found the treasure but their pockets are full of toys
And their victors of status but of true spoils they can't enjoy
Although no man's an island within many of them exists a void
And they will forever forfeit passage across the bridge that they've destroyed

In the hollow of our hands we survive
Drifting through the meadow next to mountains in the sky
No method to the madness but in madness they will climb
Why settle in the heavens when the river's in decline
To arrive is to wither and erode
To rest upon your laurels is to shrivel to the bone
To catch the unexpected ditch the devil that you know
And if you get to where you're going then there's nowhere left to go

Before we lay in ash
I feel ascension giving way at last

Into the valley once more now we go
Into the gray, into the ground down below

Overall Meaning

In this song, Zack Hemsey talks about the frailty and impermanence of the pillars that our cultures and lives are built upon. He notes how the great monuments of our minds and our cultures, like stone pillars, will eventually crumble to dust when exposed to the light of attention. Hemsey creates a metaphor between the stone pillars and our cultural and mental constructs that we believe to be solid and unchanging, but that are actually prone to crumbling under scrutiny. The meaning of our lives and the ornaments of our culture are vastly different, but often mistaken for each other. We must strip away the surface and reveal the great divide between them to truly understand and live life to its fullest.

Hemsey also talks about the choices we make in life and their impact on our destination. He encourages us to reject or accept what life gives us, but to remember that ultimately, our destinations are determined by our steps. The lyrics also allude to the idea of letting go of fixed beliefs and expectations, as they serve to hold us back and limit our potential. Instead of resting on our laurels, we must embrace change and challenge ourselves to continue growing and evolving.

The song ends with the idea that arriving at the destination can itself be a form of erosion and decay. To truly live life fully, we must keep moving and exploring, and avoid settling into the comfort of what we already know. In the end, the journey is the reward.

When I first found Zack, I was sad that he rapped during his amazing instrumentals. Then, I listened to what he was saying, realized how amazing his content is.
Thanks Zack. Looking forward to your next song.

@LynchByInch

that's me!!! it's crazy I used to be so ignorant and just listen to instrumentals.... the message ... the message is too powerful to deny and now I train to nothing but his vocal tracks.

@SynesterWolf

I'm glad that Zack usually releases an instrumental so he doesn't lose that fan base but it makes me sad that so many people are against his lyrical style. In almost every video of his I see, there is a comment about not liking the lyrics. I for one love the songs with the lyrics because they show how he really wanted to express himself in his music. keep it up Zack. I love every bit of what I've heard of this new album so far!!

@dickbaguette3627

SynesterWolf Lyrical ones are the way to go for me because I absolutely Love his style , but when im not in the mood I can go for Instrumentals, what he does is he gives us options which not many artists do.

@bunathan2485

SynesterWolf I prefer Lyrical

@DarkWarrior002

What the hell? Is that true? People are not liking his lyrics?? His lyrics are one of the best things I've ever seen/read/heard. He's a genius in my eyes.

@WickedKiller7

For me, it's not that I don't like his lyrics, they sound fine, and I listen to this no problem. But in general I prefer instrumentals over stuff with lyrics because it lets me have better "immersion and imagination". It's nothing to do with Zack, I do this with almost all music. I only listen to stuff with lyrics sometimes, and usually because I really like the beat or something and can't find the instrumental. :)

@bunathan2485

Ohh, I like both

There's something about his lyrics that are delicious, like it's very well structured, and the words are very poetic. It's incredible how society isn't used to this sort of music or should I also say this type of lyrics; it's just so outstanding and full of rich words that can broaden our vocabulary.
I'm just very captured and listening to every song as well as reading all the lyrics and I'm just amazed.
