I think your commentary has missed out on a key aspect of the movie.
The 300 is not the story of what happened but rather it is the tall tale told to inspire troops on the eve of the battle shown at the end of the movie.
It's a play-within-a-play. The narrator is telling this tale to his troops to energize them and motivate them to Victory.
As such it's not appropriate to question the historical accuracy of the tale - neither the narrator in nor the audience expected historical accuracy. They expected motivation. I think it delivers that by the kiloton.

I distinctly remember either Frank Miller or Zack Snyder giving an interview and talking about how 300 is their vision of what an ancient spartan storyteller would have told about the battle of Thermopylae.

That's exactly what it is. Everything is biased and hugely exaggerated on purpose, to creat an epic story. From the Greeks pov, the Persians were depicted as monsters ect to make a clear enemy and makes it easy to hate them, and Spartans as almost invincible. Ancient propaganda. It's excellent when you see that point imo.

300 is very good, one of the best inspirational movies ever made. It's over the top male energy and larger than life tale of defense, betrayal, loss and revenge goes well beyond any typical movie... some of the best work ever made by Frank Miller and Zack Snyder.
And a tip of the hat in respect to all the actors and F/X technicians that made green screen theater look so impressive.

It is indeed a story told by Delios, which you mention, yet ignore throughout this video. Rather than a historical account, it is a propaganda story meant to incite and inspire the Spartans. From its armor and warfare embellishments to the monsterization of foreigners and the dehumanization of Ephialtes, it's a tactic.

Dying in battle was not "nearly as worthy as returning victorious," it was the ultimate honor. Spartan soldiers only earned tombstones marking their graves if they died in battle. It was the absolute best case scenario to die for Sparta

I love the "logic" that films can just be any old shit, because that's "entertainment". 300 is based on actual events and an actual battle, the comic, which I'm sure you're not literate enough to read, was famous for being accurate, but there are differences, like who it was that showed the Persians the path around the pass. You can find out in a 3 minute video. Therefore if the movie is not accurate to the comic, that is not accurate to the actual events anyway, you just get a bunch of shit instead that's just a meaningless piece of entertainment that only really satisfies semi-literate people.

Those of us that had read the comic, would be pissed off, even you would be, if you could read, which you clearly can't. Therefore it's a valid point, even if you don't get it, because you don't like to read or watch an entire video before commenting.

What's hilarious is more the pathetic analogies between the Spartans and the yanks, and that the Persians are Iran, but everyone knows about the Helots, 30% of the Spartan population, who were slaves with no rights. They were also much less democratic than the Athenians, who did not have a king, but a president, the first, but back then it only meant chairman. So it was funny going around correcting all the dumb yanks going "This is sparta" about how they kept slaves or used to bugger boys in barracks, so really taking that kind of attitude only meant people like me could easily humiliate dumb yanks with actual history, which is far more entertaining.

It seems like Joblo might have missed the meaning behind some of the things depicted in this movie. It's told from the point of view of the one eyed soldier (who's name escapes me) while he's telling the story of what happened during the kings battle. I'm pretty sure it's meant to visualize his obvious exaggeration of the events that took place. At least that was what i got from the film..

I read in an school book that Persian "inmortals" where archers in real life. These troop where called that not only because of how difficult it was to kill them, but also because reinforcements came to their lines constantly, giving to their enemies the impresion that their numbers never descent no matther how many of them they take down

Another fact. So as you mention before, the Spartans had meet up and fought along with other Greek nations. The story of 300 comes from how they knew that the Persians found out about the secret passage. So the 300 Sparta is stayed behind and fought off the Persians allowing the other Greeks to escape and regroup and fight again with reinforcements. (Very abridged version of events)

Much like the movie makes clear this is suppose to be an inspiring story Told by Delios to inspire the greek army he's speaking to, Snyder and Miller Also said essentially the same thing in an interview.

And much like how Delios was essentially glorifying events for propaganda, Sparta in real life did A Lot of that to amplify their perception among their region in the ancient world. A lot of the myth of spartans being extreme elite soldiers is more or less fabricated to scare their enemies. I mean.. its not at all like they didnt lose battles and wars to rival city states like Athens or Corinth for example.

Pretty good vid thanks for making it, but you got a few things wrong. 1- the end where dilios gives the speech to the Spartans he specifically says 10k Spartans and 40k Greeks not hundreds of thousands. 2- biggest of all there WERE Africans within the Persian army as they had control of almost all of Egypt and some of a few other African countries, and they also had control of part of Europe Asia and the middle east so that is why all of those races are in their army and they are portrayed in the style of their cultures so it was very disgusting to hear you basically call them racist for having Africans and Asians in their army. Also the bone people were the African soldiers as that more reflected their warrior culture (tho it's more notable of southern/central Africa). There were a couple other things that were very minor that you just didn't give the entire truth about which is understandable if you don't know about all of it.

Ok, I am Greek. Good video but the claim about throwing babies in Caiadas (Καιάδας) is totally inaccurate. For the past 100 years archaiologists have searched the area and the only baby skeleton remains they found (one or two) were from the late roman period or the middle ages. It is more likely that for ancient Spartans this was a place of execution for convicted people. Νοw, what are the true inacurracies: a) The "this is Sparta scene"! Xerxes never send messengers to Leonidas to order Spartans to surrender. In fact Irodotus claimed that this happened a long time ago.Also Leonidas never came face to face with Xerxes. b) The senate were well respected elders and certainly not priests. c) Spartans were not fighting naked d) There were many other Greeks who fought alongside the Spartans (Mycineans, Arcadians, Locreans etc.). e) Efialtes was not deformed and never wanted to be a spartan soldier. He was only interested in money. f) Αristodimos (Delios in the movie) never became the inspiring leader of the spartan army. g) Persians were NOT monstrous savages, at least the way the movie depicts them (grenades and rhinos is bullshit) :PPPPPP

It's actually not that unlikely that black soldiers fought in the Persian army since Egypt was a Persian colony back then and bordered on Nubia, where famous mercenary archers hailed from. The Persian army was a reflection of the gigantic empire with its different cultures and people. Ironically that was one of its flaws, since communication and logistic problems seem to have been a major issue during the Persian wars and Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia later on. Sadly, no accounts exist of albino giants and deformed hacksaw-handed mutants in the Persian army.

The film obviously has taken artistic liberties and made it into a visual feast and more interesting plot lines. So I don't discount the fact that the film is not historically accurate. Besides, of course, the storyteller is going to embellish the 300 as warrior deities and demonize the enemies. It's suppose to inspire the Greeks into battle and fight for their homeland. In general, it is also meant for the general audience as inspiration to fight for what you believe in.

In Ancient Greek art on vases and other things, the Greeks were often depicted as nude, with maybe a cape and a helmet. They would also be posed with their weapon in a dominant or victorious position over their enemy, who would be fully clothed & armored. This showed the Greeks as “dominant”. And remember that this story is never meant to be historically accurate, it is literally shown to be Spartan propaganda. Which is why the Persians are depicted as they are. Also, to people that complain that there were more than just the Spartan 300 there, they address this in the film. The Spartans were one of the only Greek polis’ to have a standing professional army. The other Greek polis had a levy that would go out during the war season but they were farmers and smiths, etc.

Great movie. Snyder style was actually appropriate and benefitted the movie. I feel it is Gerard Butler's only good movie. Xerxes is amazing. Also....this movie gave us one of the best South Park episodes....D-Yikes.

It's funny I might be wrong but I never took the movie as accurate and I thought it was done very much like Frank Miller's graphic novel for a reason. I always interpreted it as a story being told to type up men before battle. At the very end we realize this is being told as a story of the events that happened at the hot gate. And the storyteller is basically hyping up his men about these great deeds and how 300 Spartans defeated these monstrous evil versions. He's doing what a storyteller was supposed to do back then spinning a yarn to inspire his people. basically he is an unreliable narrator he's taking something that was true but blowing it out of proportion to inspire the soldiers behind him. we just didn't beat a few thousand warriors we beat almost a million men with crazy looking demon animals and half man half animal hybrid people. I just took it as someone spinning a tail maybe my interpretation is wrong now upon watching this video

Aristodemus didn't return alone, he was actually sent home with 2 others who both couldn't fight either. All 3 were social pariahs afterwards of course. We know of Aristodemus because he went on to redeem himself in battle later, while the other 2 killed themselves out of shame.

I studied Classics (the study of Ancient Greece and Rome) for years and one of my profs talked about this movie and how much he hated it (as a depiction of Ancient Greece), but that it's a great movie.
He did say, however, that the only real good thing about this movie is how they depict Sparta the city, i.e. without walls. That is entirely true, as Spartans relied on slave-work to work the fields. Spartan citizens focused on war-training, so there were no need for walls. However, one of the most common thing Spartans had to worry about were revolts and quelling them, but this too also served to help train soldiers.

I find it amusing that in reality the Spartans would wear their breastplate but not there tunics so not to get them bloody. Skin & booze is easy to clean blood off of. Leaving thing below their waist swinging in the breeze. It would make the movie rating problematic!

This film was criticized so hard. But, it's not a documentary. It was made for entertainment purposes only. And it's still one of my favorite movies today. I've watched it at least 10 times. And the sequel about 3 times. Talking about it makes me want to watch both movies right now.
