In 2001, she started her singing career in the blues band "Fifty Fingers". She sang in musical groups in Angoulême, especially in a jazz quintet. She became one of the four singers of Izar-Adatz (Shooting Star), a variety band which consisted of sixteen people with whom she toured for two years, especially in the Midi-Pyrenees and the Basque Country. She worked in the studio as a chorister in Toulouse and performed with many singers including Maeso, Art Mengo, Vladimir Max, Jean-Pierre Mader and Serge Guerao.
In May 2010, French magazine Telerama announced: "Rumor has swelled in recent weeks: Zaz is a sacred voice, and she will be the revelation of the summer!". On 10 May 2010, Zaz released her first album. It contains songs written by herself ("Trop sensitible") and co-composed ("Les Passants", "Le Long de la route", "Prends garde à ta langue", "J'aime à nouveau", "Ni Oui Ni Non"). Kerredine Soltani produced the album under Play On label, and wrote and composed the hit single "Je veux". The pop singer Raphaël Haroche wrote her songs "Éblouie par la nuit", "Port Coton" and "La Fée". In 2010, she signed a contract for her tours with Caramba and publisher Sony ATV. She was invited to many TV shows (such as Taratata or Chabada) and was featured in several programs on the radio.
Zaz then toured France (Paris, La Rochelle, Montauban, Saint-Ouen, Chateauroux, Landerneau, Fécamp...), performed at the Francofolies of Montreal (Canada), Monthey (Switzerland), Brussels, Berlin, and Milan... In autumn Zaz topped the charts in Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria. Matthieu Baligand, her manager and producer at Caramba Entertainment, explained to Liberation: "We talk a lot of her right now and people are waiting her at the turn... Despite the demand, it seems preferable to do her first tour in fifty small places which will render her credible. Zaz is a popular, intuitive artist, who is familiar with music, who can sing, but doing a quality show is something else (...)." In November 2010, the debut album Zaz became double platinum, and she was awarded "Revelation Song" by the Academy Charles Cros. Zaz also won the European Border Breaker Awards: she was named the French artist most played abroad in 2010. According to a survey published by L'Internaute, Zaz was the most favorite singer of the French in the 2010 ranking.

Si je perds
Zaz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Je suis la méchante
Si mes enfants m'invitent
Je fais la pas content
Et quand ils me visitent
Je suis la transparente
Je me sens palote
Je me sens lotte
Des inconnus me sortent
A croire quand je me vois
Que je suis déjà morte
Si je perds la mémoire
Faudrait pas s'inquiéter
C'est que ma vie est au soir
D'une triste journée
Si je perds la raison
Faudrait pas s'en vouloir
Si c'est plus ma maison
Laissez moi dans le couloir
Si je perds les pédales
Et si ça vous inquiète
Si ça vous fait trop mal
Je ne sais plus qui vous êtes
Et si je perds la boule
N'ayez pas trop pitié
Ma tête est une foule
De visages oubliés
Je me sens friperie
Je me fais momie
Mes enfants me déplacent
Comme un vieux manuscrit
Et j'ai le feuilles qui cassent
Et je suis mal écrit
Je me sens bizarre
Je me vis trop tard
Si je pense aux instants
Où j'ai fait sans savoir
La course avec le temps
Sans me dire au revoir
Si je perds la mémoire
Faudrait pas s'inquiéter
C'est que ma vie est au soir
D'une triste journée
Si je perds la raison
Faudrait pas s'en vouloir
Si c'est plus ma maison
Laissez moi dans le couloir
Si je perds les pédales
Et si ça vous inquiète
Si ça vous fait trop mal
Je ne sais plus qui vous êtes
Et si je perds la boule
N'ayez pas trop pitié
Ma tête est une foule
De visages oubliés
Si je perds la mémoire
Faudrait pas s'inquiéter
C'est que ma vie est au soir
D'une triste journée
Si je perds la raison
Faudrait pas s'en vouloir
Si c'est plus ma maison
Laissez moi dans le couloir
Si je perds les pédales
Et si ça vous inquiète
Si ça vous fait trop mal
Je ne sais plus qui vous êtes
Et si je perds la tête
N'ayez pas trop pitié
Bientôt je serai bête
Et vous aurez oublié
The song "Si je perds" by Zaz tells the story of an elderly person who is losing their memory and struggling with their age. The lyrics use metaphors such as "Je me sens brocante" (I feel like a second-hand store) and "Je me fais momie" (I turn into a mummy) to describe the physical and emotional deterioration that comes with old age. The person is aware of their decline and expresses their desire to not be a burden on their loved ones, asking them to not worry and simply let them be.
The first verse describes the person's loneliness and feeling of being unwanted or bothersome to their children. The second verse recognizes the inevitability of mental and physical decline, but asks for understanding and acceptance from those around them. The third verse reflects on a life that has moved too quickly, where the person did not take the time to say goodbye to loved ones or savor moments fully. The chorus repeats the message that, despite the hardship of old age and illness, the person does not want pity or worry from those around them.
Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones while they are here.

Je me sens brocante
I feel like a pile of unwanted vintage items
Je suis la méchante
I'm the difficult one to deal with
Si mes enfants m'invitent
If my children invite me over
Je fais la pas content
I put on an unhappy face
Et quand ils me visitent
And when they visit me
Je suis la transparente
I feel invisible
Je me sens palote
I feel pale and weak
Je me sens lotte
I feel like a fish out of water
Les enfants me nettoient
The children clean me up
Des inconnus me sortent
Strangers take me out
A croire quand je me vois
I can hardly believe it when I see myself
Que je suis déjà morte
That I'm already dead
Si je perds la mémoire
If I lose my memory
Faudrait pas s'inquiéter
Don't worry too much
C'est que ma vie est au soir

Si ça vous fait trop mal
If it hurts you too much
Je ne sais plus qui vous êtes
I won't know who you are anymore
Et si je perds la boule
And if I go completely off the rails
N'ayez pas trop pitié
Don't feel too sorry for me
Ma tête est une foule
My head is a crowd
De visages oubliés
Of forgotten faces
Je me sens friperie
I feel like a wrinkled old thing
Je me fais momie
I'm turning into a mummy
Mes enfants me déplacent
My children move me around
Comme un vieux manuscrit
Like an old manuscript
Et j'ai le feuilles qui cassent
And I have pages that break
Et je suis mal écrit
And I'm badly written
Je me sens bizarre
I feel strange
Je me vis trop tard
I realize I'm living too late
Si je pense aux instants
If I think about the moments
Où j'ai fait sans savoir
When I did without knowing
La course avec le temps
The race against time
Sans me dire au revoir
Without saying goodbye to myself
Et vous aurez oublié
And you will have forgotten
