Song for the unification of Europe
Zbigniew Preisner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Zbigniew Preisner's song "Song for the unification of Europe" are taken from a passage in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically from 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. The passage speaks about the importance of love, as it is the only thing that endures beyond time and can bring unity amongst people. It begins by saying that even if a person speaks in the tongues of men and of angels, but does not have love, they are like a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. This implies that without love, words are meaningless and have no substance.

The song then continues with the idea that even if a person has great knowledge and understanding of the mysteries of the world, without love, they have nothing. Love is patient, it is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails, no matter what happens, and it is the greatest of all. The final line emphasizes that faith, hope, and love remain, but love is the greatest.

Overall, the lyrics of the song are a call for unity, particularly in the context of Europe, where the continent has been divided by various factors throughout history. The song encourages people to focus on love as the only thing that can bring about true unity and harmony.

Preisner has helped Kieslowski in this magnificent way of finishing the first part of the Three Colours Trilogy. Julie needs to forgive "destiny" to resume her life and she decides to give it a try. This song represents several things - this first move of her life, the way we human beings tend to complcate what is so simple and, above all, that's a sound message to Europeans of what True Europe must represent to Humanity. Magnificent.
