A band from Toulouse, France, combining reggae, ska, rock and raï and much more. The band is led by three singers originally from Morocco. Most of their lyrics have a political content, addressing issues such as the discrimination against Arab immigrants. The band was formed in 1985 and split in 2003 and 2012
Key songs include:
Tomber la chemise (Take Off Your Shirt) - The summer hit in many European countries that propelled Zebda into the forefront.
Motivés - Their political 'anthem', with which has a political party, called 'Motivé-e-s' which ran for the city council elections of Toulouse (they got about 15%).

Ouala, oualalaradime
Ouala, oualalaradime
A 10 ans, j'étais dur à cuire
Ouala, oualalaradime
Ouala, oualataradime
A 10 ans j'étais farouche
Ouala, oualalaradime
Ouala, oualalaradime
Mineur, j'avais l'avantage majeur
D'avoir mis à l'amende le facteur
Tu me crois tu vaux pas un CFA
Je le jure sur la tête de moi
Refrain bis:
Ouala, oualalaradime
Ouala, oualalaradime
The song "Oualalaradime" by Zebda is an autobiographical piece that highlights the mischievous and rebellious behavior exhibited by the singer when he was growing up. The first verse reveals that he was a liar in his youth and compares himself to a dentist because he was skilled at lying with ease. He also boasts about being an efficient trickster, similar to Scifo the renowned football dribbler.
The second verse indicates that he was always lazy and did not want to do any work. He aims for grand delusions of grandeur similar to Pinocchio, but his achievements were purely based on lies. He brags about being sly and tricking people through his deceptions.
The third verse reveals the upbringing that he received. His mother would chastise him and demand he greet adults politely. However, he was so stubborn that, even as a child, he was uncompromising on his behavior. He boasts about his dramatic confrontations with people, even those older than him, and how he convinced them he was not to be trifled with.
The chorus of the song, "Ouala, oualalaradime," is an onomatopoeic term and does not mean anything. It's a callback to North African Arabic and serves a rhythmic function within the song.

Liar like a dentist, just right

And like Pinocchio but without the fairy

Without a long siskin pushing me
I sneaked around
You believe me, you ain't worth a dime
I swear, oualalaradime
