Born in the neighborhood of Irajá, Rio de Janeiro, Zeca Pagodinho grew up around the most traditional types of samba and started making his own verses while still a kid. In the '70s, Zeca started frequenting the Carnival Block of Cacique de Ramos, which took place in Rio de Janeiro every Wednesday and became a true pagode venu (pagode is a type of samba). At one of these jams, samba singer Beth Carvalho was impressed with Zeca's skills and invited him to record the song "Camarão Que Dorme a Onda Leva". From that point on, Zeca began to record his own albums. There are now 15 of them, and four DVDs. His creative, joyful, malicious songs translate the day-by-day of the typical easygoing carioca (citizen or Rio) and are a big success in Brazil. He's one of the biggest-sellers in the country.
One of Zeca's first hits is SPC and it appeared on his first album. The SPC (it stands for Credit Protection Service) is a blacklist of bad debtors from which it is hard to get one's name removed . The song, a partnership between Arlindo Cruz and Zeca, tells the story of someone who asks a friend (or partner) to use their credit card on his behalf; afterwards, the relationship breaks up. Both of them are poor.

Seu eu não sou merecedor desse amor
Se eu choro
Será que você não notou
É a você que eu adoro
Carrego esse meu sentimento
Sem ressentimento
É, a cana quando é boa
Se conhece pelo nó
Assovio entre os dentes
Uma cantiga dolente
Entre cacos e cavacos
Sobrei eu, duro nos cascos
Bem curtindo pelo cheiro dos sovacos
Judia de mim
E quem dança qualquer dança
A bonança não sabe o que é
Desconhece a esperança
No falso amor leva fé
Quem de paz se alimenta
Se contenta com migalhas
Não se aflige e corrige
As próprias falhas
The lyrics to Zeca Pagodinho's "Judia de Mim" reflect a feeling of unworthiness and unrequited love. The repetitive phrase "Judia de mim" translates to "torment me" or "torture me," indicating that the singer feels caught in a painful situation. He questions whether he is deserving of the love he desires from his lover, expressing vulnerability and doubt. The line "Se eu choro, será que você não notou" (If I cry, did you not notice?) conveys a sense of desperation and longing for attention and affection. Despite this, there is a sense of acceptance and resignation to the situation, as the singer acknowledges that he carries his feelings without resentment.
The song also includes metaphors and imagery that add depth to the emotional themes. The verse "É, a cana quando é boa / Se conhece pelo nó" (Yes, a good sugarcane / You can tell by its knot) illustrates the idea that true value is not always immediately apparent, and that hardship can reveal character. The imagery of "cacos e cavacos" (broken pieces and splinters) and "duro nos cascos" (hard and worn out) paint a picture of a rough existence, but one that can be enjoyed through even the smallest pleasures.
Overall, "Judia de Mim" is a poignant reflection on love, self-worth, and the complexities of human relationships.
