The Middle
Zedd Maren Morris & Grey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Stay or leave, the cabinets are bare and I'm unaware
Of just how we got into this mess, got so aggressive
I know we meant all good intentions
So pull me closer
Why don't you pull me close?
Why don't you come on over?
Oh baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle?
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle?
In the middle
Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle?
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle?
In the middle, oh
Take a step back for a minute, into the kitchen
Floors are wet and taps are still running, dishes are broken
How did we get into this mess? Got so aggressive
I know we meant all good intentions
So pull me closer
Why don't you pull me close?
Why don't you come on over?
I can't just let you go, oh
Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle?
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle?
In the middle
Looking at you, I can't lie
Just pouring out admission
Regardless of my objection, oh
And it's not about my pride
I need you on my skin
Just come over, pull me in, just
Oh, baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle?
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle?
In the middle, no no
Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle? Oh yeah
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle? Oh
In the middle
Baby, why don't you just meet me in the middle, baby?
I'm losing my mind just a little
So why don't you just meet me in the middle, middle?
In the middle, middle
The song is about a couple who are in the middle of an argument, but they both still have feelings for each other. The first verse starts with the line "Take a seat right over there, sat on the stairs," suggesting that the couple have become physically distant from each other, so much so that one of them is now sitting on the stairs outside. As the lyrics progress, it becomes clear that the couple are in the middle of a fight, with both of them unsure of how they got there. They both have "good intentions" but have become "so aggressive," highlighting the fact that sometimes even the best of intentions can lead to bad outcomes.
The chorus is a plea for reconciliation as the singer asks why the two can't just "meet in the middle." The repetition of this phrase throughout the song underscores how important it is for the couple to come together, despite their differences. The singer is "losing [their] mind just a little," indicating how much the relationship means to them, and how hard it is to let go. The singer's vulnerability is further showcased in the bridge, where they admit that they "need [their partner] on [their] skin." Essentially, the singer is saying that they can't stand to be apart from their partner, even for a moment.

@Drifterman319 I know it's heavily autotuned and produced, but the vocalist can obviously sing regardless. Autotune is everywhere in this genre, the pitch has to be flawless and the human voice can't achieve that level of perfection.
This isn't my type of music, but I can appreciate it for what it is - commercial pop music with an EDM twist made to be a radio hit. It's really good for what it was meant to be. The vocals, composition and production are super catchy. Try not to be so bitter.
