Seven Nation Army
Zella Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I'm talkin' to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette

And the message comin' from my eyes says leave it alone...

Don't wanna hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell
And if I catch it comin' back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that ain't what you want to hear
But that's what I'll do

And the feeling coming from my bones says find a home...

I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera forevermore
I'm gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will think no more

And the stains comin' from my blood tell me "Go back home"...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Zella Day's song "Seven Nation Army" are loaded with meaning. The song starts with "I'm gonna fight 'em off, a seven nation army couldn't hold me back." This line talks about fighting off what seems like an insurmountable task. A "seven nation army" refers to an overwhelming force, and Day is saying that nothing can stop her from achieving her goals. The next lyric "They're gonna rip it off, taking their time right behind my back," shows that someone or something is trying to hinder her progress, but she doesn't let it get to her, instead choosing to keep moving forward.

The line "And I'm talking to myself at night because I can't forget, back, and forth through my mind behind a cigarette," suggests that the singer is wrestling with some personal demons. Maybe she is going through something tough and can't seem to let it go. The next line, "And the message coming from my eyes says leave it alone..." suggests that Day is trying to convince herself and those around her that she is fine.

The chorus shows that the singer doesn't want to hear about anyone else's problems or stories but has her own to tell. She is willing to serve it back to whoever brings negativity her way. The feeling in her bones tells her that she needs to find a home, maybe a place where she can be herself, away from judgment and criticism. The song ends with Day bleeding, thinking no more, as the bloodstains tell her to go back home.

@DanFernandesBenficaSaint

A guitar and a voice. How unoriginal. When you cover a song you want to make it sound like you’ve just written the song. The Cure playing Purple Haze. This is a cover. It sounds like a Cure song. If you never heard the Hendrix song you would think so. A voice and a guitar / piano isn’t anything more than what I can do. How many covers have you heard that are exactly the same style as this? Okay her voice is great. But give me something more. Especially if you want me to say it’s a “great” cover. Certainly not.
