They began as studio engineers at Mickie Most's RAK recording studio in London, engineering music for British groups like the Pet Shop Boys, Young Disciples, and Robert Plant. In 1997 they were asked by a college friend, Nigel Godrich (who was busy producing 'OK Computer'), to remix Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls". They called the mix "the Zero 7 Mix" which stuck.

While you do, while you do
I swap places with you
Just to see things through
Just sing me the tune
And you'll see
I'll keep it here for you
I'll wait for your cue
You wrote down all the words
Black and white
On a wall
Just keepin' it so
Yeah you know how it goes
No plans for a change, nothing strange
No not today no way
Now sing me the tune
Cash it in and throw it all away
Never needed any of it anyway
So you twist and you turn
Uncomfortable fool, you'll never learn
But you can take a stand
Forget all about the plans California rose
Side one track two
On a record of you
I've even stuck on a groove
That I don't wanna lose
Just play it again, as a friend
It's your favorite worn-in shoes
Now sing me the tune
Cash it in and throw it all away, yeah
Never needed any of it anyway
So you crash, and you burn
Sometimes the road will twist and turn
Some of this, less of that
Forget all about the map California road
Cash it in and throw it all away
Never needed any of it anyway
Cash it in and throw it all away, yeah
Never needed any of it anyway
Cash it in and throw it all away
Never needed any of it anyway
Cash it in and throw it all away
Never needed any of it anyway
"Throw It All Away" by Zero 7 is a chill and mellow song that speaks of letting go and starting anew. The lyrics talk about trying to talk things through with someone who seems to be stuck in their ways and unwilling to change. The singer even tries to swap places with the person to see things from their perspective but eventually realizes that it's futile. Instead, the singer asks the person to sing them the tune, to share with them their favorite worn-in shoes, which is an invitation for them to open up and be vulnerable.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Cash it in and throw it all away, never needed any of it anyway," which is a message of liberation and detachment. It seems to suggest that the person should let go of all their plans and ideas, and simply live in the moment. The singer acknowledges that sometimes the road will twist and turn, but urges the person to forget about the map and take a stand. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the message of letting go and being free.

Love this song man, been listening to this for well over a decade now. Its just a perfect, uplifting, vibey tune. There's just something about Zero 7 songs in general that I love, the layers of complexity, the melodies, the bass and the great singing. Their first three albums are timeless for me.

My best friend worked at TGI Fridays for the summer in 2007 and this song would always come on and we'd jam when I'd visit him. I looked into the band and got hooked on Zero 7. All these years later we are jamming "Mono" and still revisit the summer of 2007 when we were high school seniors with no cares or worries.

That beautiful song brings me back to Santa Cruz, CA when in 2016, in a middle of working flight, I took a break and went to Cowells Beach to try surfing longboards again, after a 50 years gap. It was wonderful and for an entire afternoon I was out of this (sometimes miserable) world...
