Everything Up
Zero 7 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mauritania to Wellsdon Green
Truth is faster than a laser beam
Cross the table and the seventies
Is coloring, coloring everything

With a mirror and a steady hand
We can remedy a broken man
Turn it round like Zinedine Zidane
Yes we can, imagine if you can

Well well well, well well well well well, ooh.

Spot the difference if you can, come on
Catch a fire inside your hand
Its burning deeper like moody man
One oh one oh one oh one come on
Murakami would have told you so
If you catch him will you let me know
Bobbing apples in the studio
Ai-kido Ai-ki-do-si-do

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la la

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la la

(Baltees) in full swing (tearing up) everything

Cross the table and the seven seas
Its coming faster than a laser beam
Spot the difference if you can
Its coloring, coloring everything
Turn it round (round round) if you can
Yes we can, imagine if we can
Yes we can, imagine if we can
Turn it round like Zinedine Zidane (imagine if we can)

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la (whoo hoo)
La la la la
La la la la la

Yes we can, imagine if we can

La la la la
La la la la
La la la la (Yes we can, imagine if we can)
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la
La la la la la (Yes we can, imagine if we can)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Zero 7's song "Everything Up" seem to have a nonsensical quality to them but when closely analyzed, it becomes apparent that they may be referencing a range of different concepts and ideas. Starting with the opening line "Mauritania to Wellsdon Green," it appears that Zero 7 are attempting a "spot the difference" game to see if listeners can catch the references made within the song. However, this line is not actually referencing anything specific and is merely a way to connect two places.

The next two lines "Truth is faster than a laser beam/Cross the table and the seventies" may then refer to the idea that truth can travel astonishingly fast, crossing barriers such as time (the seventies) and distance (a table). The lyrics then continue to describe the idea that we can use mirrors and our steady hands to try and heal a broken person, turning things around just like how Zinedine Zidane managed to turn around a football game with his skills on the field. The repetition of the phrase "imagine if you can" drives the message home that all these things are possible, but only if we are willing to try.

The latter half of the song is made up of repetitions of the refrain "la la la la" and the phrase "Yes we can, imagine if we can." Despite initially appearing nonsensical, the lyrics have a hopeful quality that encourages listeners to imagine a better world and take active steps to make it a reality.
