Future
Zero 7 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Did you write it on your hand
Put a name on it
To help you understand
Well do you see
The futures holidays are for me
Just let me know
Like the sound of it
Gonna hang it on your wall
Turn and run with it
For the sake of one and all
Where you go, nobody knows
Well do you see
The futures holidays are for me
Just let me know
Where to go
Where you go after the fall
The lyrics of Zero 7's song Futures contain a sense of uncertainty and the desire to have control over the circumstances. The opening lines suggest that the singer is aware of some important information and wants to make sure it is not forgotten. They ask if the listener wrote it on their hand, implying that it is something they wouldn't want to forget. The next lines are about putting a name on it, suggesting that giving it an identity will help the listener understand the information better.
The chorus of the song is about the future, and the singer's desire to know where they will end up. They talk about the future's holidays being for them, implying that they have a sense of control over what's to come. However, they also acknowledge the fact that they do not know what the future holds, and therefore ask to be informed of where to go after the fall. The fall here could be interpreted as a metaphor for failure, suggesting that the singer wants guidance for the times when things don't go as planned.
Overall, the song Futures is about the human desire to control the future and have a sense of direction. The lyrics suggest that while we cannot predict what's to come, we can still have control over our actions and responses, and that hope can be found even in uncertain times.

This is the song that plays when you're almost at the end of a long depression period, or almost to the top of a mountain/long battle. Will forever listen to this song and love every second of it, absolutely magical. Thanks for making this Zero 7, wish I could have experienced you live.

Zero 7. One of the greatest bands ever!!!!! I just love their smooth incorparated Jazz fusion.

Just recently discovered this band and I feel so blessed! They kept popping up on one of my Pandora channels. I liked one of their songs, so Pandora fed me more and each time I went to give a thumbs up I couldn't believe it was the same band. Such diversity in one album. This song (especially the vocal harmonies) sounds very much like CSNY to me. On other tracks I can hear bits of King Crimson, ELP, Blue Oyster Cult and the list goes on. Don't know if any of those were actual influences of theirs, but as someone who came of age in the late 60s, early 70s, that's what I hear. But the way they mix it and give it a jazzy veneer makes it sound familiar, but fresh at the same time and I can't stop listening! It's the most sophisticated music I've heard in a LONG time.

Definitely get the King Crimson, ELP connection. They reeled me in with "The Waiting Line" and just fell in love with Sophie and Sia. 62 yrs here, just a perfect combination of everything I love in music. So well put, thank you for sharing!
