They began as studio engineers at Mickie Most's RAK recording studio in London, engineering music for British groups like the Pet Shop Boys, Young Disciples, and Robert Plant. In 1997 they were asked by a college friend, Nigel Godrich (who was busy producing 'OK Computer'), to remix Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls". They called the mix "the Zero 7 Mix" which stuck.

As when someone opens their mouth
It's just my luck
I get hit by a car
While carrying a cake
Dripping cherries
Bride and groom on my face
I'm not there like a ghost ship in a storm
It only figures
That I'd ride my bike
Into wet cement
And as I'm sinkin'
The last thing that I think
Is did I pay my rent
I ride through like a ghost ship in a storm
The lyrics to "Ghost Ship in a Storm" by Zero 7 reflect the feelings of the singer who doesn't seem to have control over the things happening around them. The first two lines suggest that the singer feels a strong urge to disappear when someone opens their mouth. This might imply that the singer does not find meaning in what people are saying or is anxious about facing their opinions or reflection. The next lines go on to express the singer's misfortune in life in the form of accidents. The image of getting hit by a car while carrying a cake and ruining a bride and groom's wedding with dripping cherries showcases the singer's struggles in life.
The chorus conveys the feeling of the singer's detachment from reality, their existence being unnoticeable, thus becoming a ghost in a storm. The last part of the song depicts the singer's journey through life as a ghost ship in a storm while riding a bike and sinking in wet cement, emphasising the singer's idea of riding through life without any direction, purpose or control. The final line, "I ride through like a ghost ship in a storm" sums up the idea of the singer's journey through life.
