They began as studio engineers at Mickie Most's RAK recording studio in London, engineering music for British groups like the Pet Shop Boys, Young Disciples, and Robert Plant. In 1997 they were asked by a college friend, Nigel Godrich (who was busy producing 'OK Computer'), to remix Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls". They called the mix "the Zero 7 Mix" which stuck.

Zero 7 Lyrics

Can't you see it's burning slow
Fading down the sparks of fire earth bound
Space in two
Warm beyond the love below
Close your eyes
It's time for us to go
Light keeps passing through
Over our heads
Lite from me to you
Falling down
Way beneath the healing skies
Rise and shine
The crying times left behind
Over our heads
All we see is true
Over our heads
Can't you see it too
Over our heads
Light keeps passing through
Over our heads
Lite from me to you
The opening verse of Zero 7's "Over Our Heads" is truly evocative, creating a sense of urgency and impending transformation. The line "Close your eyes/Can't you see it's burning slow" is both a plea and a warning, urging the listener to look beyond their immediate surroundings and recognize the gradual but inevitable changes happening in their world. The line "Fading down the sparks of fire earth bound/Space in two" is particularly intriguing, as it suggests a rift between earth and the heavens, between materialism and spirituality. The second half of the verse is melody-heavy and doesn't offer much lyrical substance, but it does reinforce the idea of transcendence and the need to move on.
The chorus of the song is where things really take off. The line "Over our heads/Light keeps passing through" is both mesmerizing and uplifting, painting a picture of endless possibility and serenity. The word "light" is used in multiple senses here, representing not just illumination but also weightlessness and motion. The second half of the chorus ("Lite from me to you") is a simple but effective way of conveying the transferral of energy and emotion between two people. The final verse of the song is a call to action, urging the listener to leave behind their troubles and embrace a new day. The line "Rise and shine/The crying times left behind" is both empowering and reassuring, suggesting that the difficulties of the past can be overcome with the right attitude.
