You're Mine You
Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're breaking my heart all over again.
Oh why did we start all over again?
It's too late now to wish I had never met you.
I've loved you much too much to just forget you.

If we ever part all over again,
Will I fall in love, no never again!
You said you'd love me, you made a vow,
Look what you're doing now,

You're breaking my heart all over again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra's song "You're Mine You" narrate about a painful heartbreak experienced by the singer. The song's opening line, "You're breaking my heart all over again," sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is overcome with emotions and cannot help but wish that he had never met the person who broke his heart. However, he acknowledges that it's too late for him to do anything about it, as he has already fallen deeply in love with them.

The second verse conveys a sense of regret and the fear of going through the same heartbreak all over again. The singer wonders if he will ever be able to fall in love again, should they ever part ways. They recall the promises made by the person who has now broken their heart and how they have gone back on their word. The repetition of "you're breaking my heart all over again" in the last line of each verse emphasizes the level of hurt the singer is feeling.

Overall, the song does an excellent job of capturing the emotional weight of heartbreak and the struggle of trying to move on from someone you still love.

I remember about 35 years ago, my grandfather recorded this for me onto a cassette (yes, they had those once) from a 78RPM record (yes, they had those too). I also have a 33 1/3 (extremely rare) ziggy elman record with this 1939 version and there was a slower-paced 1948 version on there as well. Both are beautiful sounding to me. I feel privileged to be able to hear music like this.
