Ziggy learned Rastafari faith from his parents and had access to some of the world's best reggae musicians in the comp band of his father – the legendary reggae Wailers. Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with Bob Marley and the Wailers when he was around 10 years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, RnB, hip-hop and roots reggae.
After their first two albums, Play The Game Right (1985) and Hey World! (1986), The Melody Makers earned their first Grammy (Best Reggae Recording) for Conscious Party (1988), an album produced by Talking Heads Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth which included the hit songs "Tomorrow People" and "Tumbling Down."
Subsequent albums included the Grammy-winning One Bright Day (1989), Jamekya (1991), Joy and Blues (1993), Free Like We Want 2 B (1995), their third Grammy winner Fallen is Babylon (1997), Spirit of Music (1999) and Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers Live, Vol 1 (2000), which featured some of their biggest hits as well as a cover of Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved."
While selling records by the millions and selling out countless concerts with the Melody Makers, including a recent European tour, Ziggy Marley has never lost sight of his foundation of faith, fellowship and family.
After two decades as the driving creative force behind The Melody Makers, Ziggy stepped out on his own with his first solo album, Dragonfly (2003). Never content to rehash the success of his past, Ziggy uses Dragonfly to explore new ground and create his own distinctive musical identity as a solo artist.
"Working on my own gave me a chance to take my time and experiment a lot," Ziggy says of the material on Dragonfly." It took one year to finish this record. It's the longest I've ever worked on a album. It's different when you on your own. At some point it's scary and then at another it's a drive that makes you focus more."
Although the members of the most close-knit musical families often yearn to step out on their own, for Ziggy, a solo debut was not a long-awaited goal. "It's not something that I wished for since I began doing music," he says. "It was just the circumstances, and I wanted to be true to myself and what I feel. The record has strong messages and it feels good."
In addition to being Ziggy's first album of solo material, for Dragonfly he felt it was time for a change of scene. "Usually we record in Kingston. These songs were written in Jamaica and recorded in America. I did the first set of recordings in a house in Miami and then went to L.A. rented a house, set up my equipment and basically did the rest there. I left Jamaica for a while, because as an artist I need to experience different things, to see the world and have different energies. Living in one place is not good for me and I was tired of making music in a studio setting. I wanted it to be more like everyday life a part of me.
"As an individual, I've opened up more by traveling outside Jamaica, and I've been more able to be open to people and ideas. It helps me to grow as a person to be outside of my element; to be on my own in a strange place meeting people. That's good for me not to be in my secure domain."
The evidence of that growth is everywhere on Dragonfly.
On July 2nd, 2006, Ziggy released his second album, Love is My Religion. He states "This album is from my heart," and he feels that he embraces his spiritual and emotional side of life. This album show Ziggy coming into his own as an artist, as he wrote all of the songs for the album and played nearly all of the instruments.
Love is My Religion is a testament to Ziggy Marley's talent as he follows in the footsteps of his father, the Legend.

When you came on the scene 10 years ago
I thought I was hip, I could deal with the trips
No matter how fast or slow
I was like a moving violation
Give me a ticket and I'm ready to ride
Thought I was the queen of syncopation
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
?Cause when you kissed my lips
When you kissed my lips
I was jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Baby, I was young, I was green
When you showed me the ropes 10 years ago
I thought I was cool, I could break all the rules
No matter how fast or slow
I was like a moving violation
Give me a ticket and I'm ready to ride
Thought I was the queen of syncopation
You know you can't give the queen no bad advice
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
?Cause when you kissed my lips
When you kissed my lips
I was jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
I was a girl from the streets
Dancin' to the beat
Of a different kind of drummer
Little Ms. Know-it-all, you don't know it all
Caught up in the rhythm of sound
Living to get down
As the song became my lover
Attitude keeps your head up to the sky
Then you kissed my lips and, ooh
I lost my cool
Look at me I'm jammin'
And everything's happenin'
I'm feeling the bliss and the reason for this
Is the love in your kiss, baby
Jammin'
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
Jammin', jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
I was like a moving violation
Give me a ticket, baby
Thought I was the queen of syncopation
You know you can't give the queen no bad advice
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
Thought I knew it all, baby
But I didn't know it all, baby
?Cause when you kissed my lips
And my backbone slipped
I was jammin'
Jammin' for the first time
The square root of a positive groove
Times a happening melody equals a jam
Give some to the back
No
Ooh, baby
No
You got me movin' and I'm jammin' for the first time
No
Ooh, baby
No
You got me movin' and I'm jammin' for the first time
I was like a moving violation
Give me a ticket, baby
Thought I was the queen of syncopation
You know you can't give the queen no bad advice
I was like a moving violation
Give me a ticket, baby
Thought I was the queen of syncopation
You know you can't give the queen no bad advice
The song "Jammin'" by Ziggy Marley is about the singer's experience of falling in love for the first time. The lyrics are set against a background of music, and the melody captures the joy and unrestrained feeling of the experience. The opening verse depicts a young, hip girl who thought she knew everything about life and relationships, but was ultimately naive. The singer compares her to a "moving violation," someone who is always ready to go faster or slower, and who doesn't see the danger in speeding.
The chorus of the song is where the true meaning comes in. "Jammin'" is a word that means dancing and having fun, and the singer describes how he felt when his lover kissed him for the first time. He was suddenly caught up in the rhythm of life, unable to look away from this person who had captured his heart. The music itself takes on a life of its own, and the two lovers become one in the joy of the moment.
The final verses of the song describe how the singer grew as a person because of this relationship. He was no longer Little Ms. Know-It-All, but someone who was willing to take risks and throw caution to the wind. The song ends with a declaration of love and happiness, and the knowledge that the act of "Jammin'" will always be a reminder of this special time in his life.

Ooh, yeah! All right!
We're jammin':
I wanna jam it wid you.
We're jammin', jammin',
And I hope you like jammin', too.
Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow:
I'n'I will see you through,
'Cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice,
Jammin' till the jam is through.
We're jammin'
To think that jammin' was a thing of the past;
We're jammin',
And I hope this jam is gonna last.
No bullet can stop us now, we neither beg nor we won't bow;
Neither can be bought nor sold.
We all defend the right; Jah - Jah children must unite:
Your life is worth much more than gold.
We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin')
And we're jammin' in the name of the Lord
We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin')
We're jammin' right straight from Yah.
Yeh! Holy Mount Zion
Holy Mount Zion
Jah sitteth in Mount Zion
And rules all creation
Yeah, we're, we're jammin' (wotcha-wa),
Wotcha-wa-wa-wa, we're jammin' (wotcha-wa),
See, I wanna jam it wid you
We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin')
I'm jammed, I hope you're jammin', too.
Jam's about my pride and truth I cannot hide
To keep you satisfied.
True love that now exist is the love I can't resist,
So jam by my side.
We're Jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin'), yeah-eah-eah!
I wanna jam it wid you
We're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin'
We're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin'
Hope you like jammin', too
We're jammin', we're jammin' (jammin')
We're jammin', we're jammin' (jammin')
I wanna (I wanna jam it wid you), I wanna
I wanna jam wid you now
Jammin', jammin' (hope you like jammin' too)
Eh-eh! I hope you like jammin', I hope you like jammin'
'Cause (I wanna jam it wid you). I wanna ... wid you.
