They formed the Melody Makers when they were teenagers in 1979, and recorded "Children Playing in the Streets" with their father. They went on to perform at their father's funeral in 1981.
The band's popularity was at its highest during 1988, prompting a major record deal with Virgin Records. Shortly thereafter, the group released "Conscious Party," their third album. On the album was the hit single "Tomorrow People," and the album went on to earn a well-deserved Grammy.

It got nothing to do with you
My papa been on the rock so long
Inherited a permanent screw
Inherited a permanent screw
Inherited a permanent screw
If you don't see me smiling
My mama been on the rock for so long
Inherited a permanenet screw
Inherited a permanent screw
Inherited a permanent screw
So you won't even know me
'Cause you can't look me in the eye
Well only then my friend you would see
That I am a rebel in disguise
Said I am a rebel in disguise
And I am a rebel in disguise
We are rebels in disguise
We are rebels in disguise
If you don't catch me smiling
Said I have got serious on my mind
Want to tell you a little story
We are living in a serious time
We are living in a serious time
Said a fire deh, said a fire deh
Fire deh a mus mus tall
You think a cool breeze
Life is real hard
But you think it gonna ease
By letting the pressure pile up on me
The baby crying
You come and ask us for a dollar bill
And we give you ten
Simply mean you should not be coming back again
Simply mean you go home and learn to help yourself
You are putting, you are putting on the pressure
Making it, making it much harder
If you don't see me smiling
It ain't got nothing to do with you
It ain't got nothing to do with you
It ain't got nothing to do with you
Then again you might have done something wrong
And you don't know where you belong
And you don't know where you belong
And you don't know where you belong
So you won't really know us
We are rebels in disgusie
Said I am a rebel in disguise
Said I am a rebel in disguise
And we are rebels in disguise
And we are rebels in disguise
Fire de a mus mus tail
And you think a cool breeze
Your life is real hard but you think it's gonna ease
By letting the pressure pile up on me
The lyrics of the song Rebel in Disguise by Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers speak about the struggles and challenges faced by the singer, who inherited a permanent screw from his parents who have been through difficult times. The repetition of the line "inherited a permanent screw" emphasizes the idea that this difficulty is a permanent part of their lives. He mentions that he might appear unfriendly or aloof, but it has nothing to do with others. The singer is dealing with serious issues and wants to draw attention to the difficult times we are living in. He mentions that people are putting on the pressure by relying on others and not helping themselves, making life harder for everyone. The song ends with the narration that they are rebels in disguise, and people won't truly know them because they can't look them in the eye.

"So... what are you rebelling against?" / "So... what you got?" I am not so much against as what I am going for. I am against so much, it would be overwhelming, yet I am for a vision, defines itself... I have lived much of what this song says. No complaints, just motivated for positive changes. All a soul can say here, as there are so many against true freedom of expression. Yet that is, without question, the battle evermore... to be who we are. I am that I am. Nobody owes any explanation. The art of life, it is and that is all I need to know. So take all the sciences that evolve and the nature of politics and rule of law- what truly can we know? One thing for certain... Love is the telling measure. The journey is the destination and life itself, the treasure. It can be a rugged ride, sure. Yet we all get ourselves to decide, how to bide and endure. Look deep into my blazing hazel eyes and see... I am no rebel in disguise. Obvious perhaps, even to the oblivious, as we swim against the tide; the sea, she sings without words, and I stay happy by her side. Yet hungry from the bounty of my soul, strong from scars that paid the tolls; she asks me what else must I explore. That answer is all ways horizons and then horizons more... Akwaaba... ~RaVen~
