Elsie
Zombie Girl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She never had an education
She uses life as her vocation
Standing on ledges clinging to the edges
The world's a hard place to land on

She has this one way conversation
Trying to avoid a confrontation
Memories of the kind she's rather leave behind
The worlds' a hard place to land on

Life can be lonely can be very sad
Can be something you wish you never had

She never had any affection
So she relates well to rejection
No stories wait discovery
Dreams have passed recovery
The worlds a hard place to land on

She just sleeps all day
In her squalid little slum
And takes little white pills
To make her body feel numb
And it's dark and dirty
And there's nothing left to eat
And in her heart there's a feeling of defeat
Smells of bus and fornication
And a bottle of cheat scent
Should she stick around
If this is all that life meant

Life can be lonely can be very sad
Can be something you wish you never had

Open the door wally, open the door

Overall Meaning

The song "Elsie" by Zombie Girl tells the story of an unfortunate woman named Elsie who has faced a life of hardship and struggles to cope with it all. Elsie never had an education and has been forced to use life as her vocation. She stands on ledges, clinging to the edges, indicating that she may be on the brink of giving up entirely. The world has been a hard place for her to land on, and her way of dealing with it is through a one-way conversation, avoiding confrontation and trying to forget the memories she'd rather leave behind.

Elsie relates well to rejection, most likely because she never had any affection in her life. Dreams that she had in the past have passed, and she feels there is no hope for discovery. She sleeps all day in her squalid little slum and takes little white pills to numb her body while desperately trying to escape the dark and dirty atmosphere. The smell of bus and fornication fill the air along with the scent of a bottle of cheat. Elsie feels defeated and questions if there's anything worth sticking around for if this is all that life has to offer.

This song presents a very raw and honest portrayal of a life that society tends to overlook. It highlights the struggles of individuals who don't have access to the resources they need to create a decent life for themselves. The song reveals the dark side of life and the devastating effects it can have on someone's mental health.

For many it is ''I Touch Myself'' that comes to mind when associating a song with Divinyls and Chrissy Amphlett. For me it is the beautifully haunting ''Elsie'' that invades and permanently inhabits a tiny corner of the psyche. Zombie Girl's rendition in it's own way captures the wonderfully ethereal nature of this piece. jtk🍁Canada

No, you are right. The problem is it is still widely known as "Sex" (I'm a). Most likely due to them not knowing it's a remake. But regardless of its title, it's a freaken awesome song no?

Kukijiro

So addictive *closes eyes* relaxing.

This is a chilling song by the Divinyls. The name of it is Elsie. It would be impossible to do a bad cover of this song. It is that good.

This isn't "Sex" (I'm a) It's "Elsie" It's labeled wrongly on the CD because the early copies were misprinted. Zombie Girl told me only the early versions had this problem. Refer to my video "Re: Zombie Girl" if you don't believe me.
